Trans States Closing its doors

A letter recently went out stating Trans States is shutting down operations by the end of this year. Rumors of Compass also, but haven’t seen anything official. Sounds like ExpressJet is taking on a bunch of aircraft as well as Skywest

Regional pilot forums are LIT today. TSA basically winding down by the end of 2020. XJT taking over their DEN base and +36 ERJ145 from TSA, at the expense of their 25 175s. UA is retaking those and sending them to SKW.

I know some folks at compass have also been wondering if this will happen soon to them. Unfortunately I think it's one of those things that was inevitable in the regional landscape. Really hoping they can get on with a major soon or atleast a more stable regional like skywest and endeavor.

Man, first compass losing Delta, now this. It’s gonna be a hard path forward. Hope everybody their lands on their feet.

I'm not surprised at this news. One, AX lost its American Eagle flying. Two, CP will be losing its Delta Connection flights. That means both AX & CP have only ONE major airline affiliation. Two, sister airline G7 also flies 50 seaters, abeit they're the CRJ-550, which is a lot nicer than the EMB-145. Three, AX & G7 are both doing United Express flying. #s 2 & 3 beg a hopelessly obvious question: WHY do both AX & G7 need to exist? Indeed, how can they both exist? Don't they fly similar capacity aircraft? Doesn't that also mean that they'll be serving the same types of airports, i.e. smaller ones like ABE? Don't they both fly for UA? So what need is there for both of them to exist? None that I can see.

The only saving grace is that G7 has a 10 year contract with UA (for whatever that's worth), and UA is supplying them with the 550s. Why would UA supply G7 with the 550 if they wouldn't be around for the foreseeable future? Why would UA make G7 the launch customer for the 550 if they weren't going to be around to fly them? Ergo, it looks like G7 will be around for at least a while yet. If I were a DXer though, I'd only work at G7 long enough to build experience, then get out; I don't know if one could make a LIFE in STL now.

Sorry to hear of this, especially for folks on the ground floor of an airline career. Is Go Jet still operating?
For now, yes. As I posted in my other response, I was surprised that both AX & G7 both were still operating. One, they both fly for UA. Two, they both fly 50 seat aircraft; granted, G7 is flying the nicer CRJ-550, but it's still a 50 seater. Three, that means not only are they flying for the same major; they're both serving similar airports. Four, G7 just inked a 10 year contract with UA to fly the 550s for them. Finally, G7 was the launch customer for the 550. G7 looks to be the healthiest of the three TSA Holdings carriers (G7, AX, and CP), though that might not be saying much...

I'd bet money that CP will shut down also. One, they lost their DL flying. Two, with the loss of their DL flights, they'll lose 2/3 of their aircraft. Three, they'll only have one affiliation left: AA. Four, all their flying is out west. Five, their AA flying will not consist of many flights. Those factors beg the question: why couldn't OO easily take over what's left of CP's flying? Why couldn't their American Eagle flights not be folded in to OO? Doesn't OO already cover the west? Don't they already fly for AA? Oh, and doesn't AA already have three, wholly owned regionals (MQ, OH, and PT)? What's left for CP? Moreover, who could CP fly for, UA? UA has plenty of other regionals doing their connecting flights. Sorry, but I don't see how CP survives.

Man, I remember when CP was the new hotness and the favored son of NW.

Fun fact, some of those 550's are SkyWest owned CRJ700's on lease to G7, they aren't some gift or vote of confidence from UA. It wouldn't be any problem at all for UA to transfer 550 flying from G7 to somebody else like OO or AX. I'd expect as much if CP closes and TSH is hurting financially, let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Points well taken. I didn't know that some of the 550s are OO owned. In any case, as has been discussed in the past, there's more consolidation to come among the regionals.
