training in own plane

I am wondering about peoples experience with buying a time building airplane. I have been planning to return to an academy school, but with new committments am thinking it will be smarter to stay in my present location and keeping working a well paying job w/benefits. It it realistic to think of buying a low time 150 and time building 800+ hours in it. Is a 152 or other similar ga aircraft built to withstand large hours in a short period of time. Any estimates on cost (25k airplane + 10k to run plane 800 hours?) Also, have others had to keep renting an ifr certified simultaneously to stay current? Would buying a new plane and making the payments and reselling be a more viable option?

I'm in a partnership with 14 other guys - it's the perfect set up. Very rarely am I ever not able to get the plane when I want it - and the costs can't be beat. Our plane (172) had an engine overhaul/annual back in April - cost $25k. Didn't have to pay an extra dime out of pocket (maintenance fund covered the cost). There hard to find, but if you can locate a good partnership, that's your best bet.

I liked it so well I bought two though I would tell you to stay away...nae, run away from partnerships. Things might be peachy for a while but when you try and get out with your money thats when things get ugly. You'll save yourself a lot of headaches. I found my training to better, more personal, and much more fun in my own aircraft. One thing that you never think about is how you'll treat the airplane because its yours. You'll pay more attention to your landings, stay off the breaks, and generally treat the plane better. After all, take care of her and she'll take care of you. Its not easy or cheap to be an airplane owner but one of the best days of my life was when I put the keys to my 150 on my keyring.

P.S. I have an IFR certified 150 for sale :D

There are 150's used for pipeline patrol that fly upwards of 10 hours a day.
