Tower or Center?

Just wondering if anybody can give me an answer on whether or not you choose the position you're interested in, or are you placed where they want you? I'm interested in Center which is why I ask, ZTL preferrably.

Ultimately, they put you where they want you. You are able to select up to 3 geographical preferences, for the state that you have been referred to, but that's the extent of it. That really doesn't even make a difference, however, because they selected me for a location that I didn't even list as one of my top 3 preferences. I have heard of people calling OKC, and catching someone on a really good day, and being able to switch facilities, but the chance of getting to do that, isn't very good. I tried, and was basically told to either take the offer that was extended to me, or get back in line, and have to start all over. So, in short, the FAA will put you where they want you, check off where they want you, and then turn around and transfer to where you really want to go. Tower to center is an automatic promotion, so it should be in your cards for the future, if you wish for it to be. Good luck :-)

These days you can pick between one and five states (or at least when I got hired, it seems they change that stuff every year...) but have no preference on Terminal or En Route.

Even though I have yet to take the test, my fingers are crossed that I end up in a tower where I can say within the same sentence "Jesus B6" and berate a particular A340 carrier for not being able to do anything ;)

I was able to pick between terminal and Center. I got referred to Indy Terminal and Indy Center. I chose Center because it guaranteed I would live in Indianapolis, where terminal was throughout the state.
