Tower Controllers

Hello all,

Just a quick, and maybe stupid question: does a local controller have a responsibility to ascertain that an aircraft lands on the assigned runway. Say an aircraft was cleared to land on 4 but is lined up and accidentally lands on 12, does the controller have any responsibility to advise the pilot that he appears to be line up with the wrong runway? I've been flipping through the 7110.65 and couldn't find anything so I figured I would ask the knowledgeable people of jetcareers!

Thanks,
Greg

Naaah, That hasn't killed anybody recently except for those 49 people in Lexington...

Does the book say anything about not letting planes fly into the ground? Serious question, I've not read the book.

As far as ensuring the pilot actually lands on the correct runway - well, we aren't flying the plane.

In regards to being responsible for advising the pilot they appear to be lined up with the wrong runway:

3-1-10. OBSERVED ABNORMALITIES
When requested by a pilot or when you deem it necessary, inform an aircraft of any observed abnormal aircraft condition.
PHRASEOLOGY-
(Item) APPEAR/S (observed condition).

EXAMPLE-
“Landing gear appears up.”
“Landing gear appears down and in place.”
“Rear baggage door appears open.”

Just don't say to a caravan driver on departure, "Starcheck xxx...looks like your landing gear is still down."

...I was really glad he was looking out for me and I didn't want to give any other impression (definitely would rather have someone say something rather than just let something bad happen)...so I really didn't know how to respond.

its been a long time that i was a tower flower but book or no book if I observe an aircraft lining up on the wrong runway i gonna say somthing.there was somthing i would tell my trainees when thay would say that somthing wasnt there job or why you maken me do this i dont see it in the book.

you may never know when youve made a diffrence, but i guarantee youll know when you havent.

a local controller should ALWAYS advise a pilot if they see something that looks weird. i worked an airport where we had 3 parallel runways. many times i've told the pilot that it appears that he's lined up for runway 30C instead of 30L. they either say thank you or tell me my eyes are deceiving me. usually it's my eyes deceiving me because of the distance to the thresholds.

i don't feel it wrong to watch out for the pilots. i also don't feel it the LC's fault if a pilot lands on the wrong surface. now...assigned runway 4 and landing on runway 12 seems to me like the LC wasn't paying attention. landing the wrong parallel seems a much easier situation to defend.
