Toughest things in a dispatchers shift

Listening to your fellow dispatchers calling station ops to tell them about bumping passengers because they are using an altn 200miles away with 25minutes of hold fuel and 1500lbs of extra fuel on a regional jet

This has got to be a 200. If I need to fuel up a crj-900, and give it a 200 mile alt, I tend to not have to restrict.

Yeah but also ERJs, and even 900s on long hauls

I haven't done any ERJ work but yeah the 900 on the extreme long like JFK-DFW runs, if there's weather, you're taking the fuel, the alt, or the people, and you pick 2 out of 3 of those. You never want to kick people if you can help it at all though. I always feel bad if I restrict a flight

I used to plan CRJ-200’s on IAD-MCI legs...now THAT was a long haul for that plane...of course, every aircraft has its limits, including the latest from Boeing and Airbus.

You havent lived till you dispatch the 145 EP. If you even think youll need an alternate, youve now kicked off 4 people.
Typical scenario when dispatching 145 EP.
CA: So I see you didn't give us any hold fuel.
ME: Well, we have a MLW issue, you either get hold fuel or an alternate and it's requiring 1 so I planned you at FL250 but if you climb to FL350 that should save you enough for about 10 mins of hold. Just watch your landing weight.

The 200 doing DEN-EUG on a hot day in DEN with possible CDRs is always fun

Yeah, a hot day in DEN makes for fun times for everyone...I think the longest segment with CRJ-200's my former employer flew out of there was DEN-YEG.

Whenever you have to weight restrict do you ever think, i just caused the next david dao?
That wasn't a weight restriction. That had to do with a dead head crew. Either they weren't booked correctly or it was a last minute thing.

Even though the situation wasn't a weight restriction, it could have also happened had it been. In any situation where you have to take pax off the aircraft involuntarily, like in the dao case, this stuff can happen.

Except that's not our dept to remove people. Cuz the FAA wants us focused on safety. Not pax removals. Stop trying to bring up pointless crap already.

And when it does, i look at it and think "Sucks for those x number of people". Either those people don't go or no one goes. Your regional airline is paid to operate a flight. Nothing says it has to be full or that everyone has to be on it.

I'm thinking of the people we DIDN'T bump. David Dao was responsible for David Dao.
Good point but also the issue was that a pax was bumped for a "must fly" crew at the very last minute. Thats on crew scheduling and the airline for bumping a pax involuntarily.

... Except he actually did vol. He then changed his mind and threw a tantrum.

I think "I made a flight plan which is responsible, and that will get 49 passengers to their destination safely" and wish the one person who i couldn't get there all the best and hope he gets there on the next flight.

I feel bad for doing it but if everyone does their job right, the incident is avoided because I will have called to warn them hours ahead, the station will know not to book people on that flight and from my understanding will accomodate the inconvenienced party (ies) accordingly.

Hmmm.. How about the CRJ-200 in July on the DEN-YEG route when you need an alternate? Yes, it was on the schedule every damn day. It's what I used to call the Kobyashi Maru scenario of dispatch.

Really the hardest part of dispatch is staying on top of things during good days. Super easy to become complacent when it's severe clear everywhere and everything is on time and under budget. Honestly the days where the fecal matter impacts the rotating air movement device are easier, because it keeps you busy. Busy is focused.

Gonna echo this one because your 4 10's FLY by when 2 days are spent cleaning up an IROP after some massive cold front trucks through a region...

That, and I miss calling the friendly people in Savannah to say hi heads up. They always knew. . .
