'Top Gun' planes boneyard-bound

Re: \'Top Gun\' planes boneyard-bound

Like the story said, the B & D model Cats don't have much life left in service either. Sad.

Fitting picture! The cat taking off, while all the Hornets are still there. Still sad!!

Hey mike, Ive talked to some naval aviators, and they say that with the incoming F22's, and the JSF's...virtually all of the F15s, 14s (obviously), 18's, AV-8s, and A10s will all extinct within the next 5-7 years. Is this true. I know the airforce is getting rid of their A10s, and the army is picking them up. Also they said that the navy would be getting the new superhornets to replace the 18s that are going away. Is ANY of this true? Im not looking foreward to seeing the last of the tomcats go away!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Gawd I wish this were true, but its not. Mis informed my friend, if it were true I would compete like heII for an A-10 slot, and in Army terms I might be competative.

Re: \'Top Gun\' planes boneyard-bound

I had a pax yesterday who is the brother of an A-10 pilot in the Michigan ANG. He told me that there was a recent announcment that the A-10 program will be extended another 15 years or something like that.

I know I'm way out of the loop on this stuff, and the guy who told me this is not what I would consider a "reliable" source, but he sounded pretty sure of his information. I believe he said his brother is a Lt. Colonel, currently flying out of Battle Creek.

Anybody else heard anything?

There was the plan for the jet lasting until 2028. That got nixed to 2012. Now, the plan is to get rid of half the fleet in order to fund the remaining half of the fleet.......yeah......you get rid of half the fleet, the rest will become unsustainable, and the rest will dissappear. That half of money saved will likely go elsewhere. Current outlook is 2008/9 for active duty....maybe up to 2012 for Guard/Reserve; though I seriously doubt it. Especially with 2005 BRAC coming around the corner. There's just no money for the crack-smoking plans out there to convert the A-10 to a "300 kt F-16", like many are trying to do.

I thought I remembered you talking about this before, but the guy sounded pretty sure of his info. Thanks for the update.

This same guy also said something about new engines for the A-10. Guess he better get an update from his brother. Or JetCareers.com....

The new engines thing has been a wet dream of the A-10 for a while. But there isn't a replacement engine selected yet that would work....that is, supply more thrust than the meager 8,900 lbs already......that would justify cost of conversion. It's all BS rhetoric, from the AF, the contractors, the A-10 System Program Office guys, etc.....all for their own self-serving reasons.
