Tons of Questions Regarding the Air Force

Well, I had another username before I went through UPT. I'll probably change it back when I'm done with FTU. At any rate, it feels as though I have done nothing besides flight training (civilian and military) for the last five years.

Ahhh, life doesn't truly begin until you start signing for the jet. I'm jealous that you still have all those days ahead of you.

Whatever you do DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT go in open general!
I was naive at 18 and the recruiter told me I could be a firefighter if I went in open general. Yeah, I was a SP (security) for four really long years. Half of which was in the sandbox!

Great Advice!

:yeahthat: Couldn't have said it better. If you choose to enlist...have a guarenteed job! It may take a little more work on your part, but it's well worth it. Just ask Ortini159!

Exactly, why are you willing to settle for nothing, go to school and study something you ENJOY!!!! that will make it go down a little easier, unless you plan on going lifetime in the military that is just a way to excuse a few years of your life, whatever you want your gonna have to work for it, you only have one life, do you wanna spend it watching other people fly the planes that you dream about!!! The army has High School 2 Flight School program as well, check this!!!

Dont get me wrong. I have nothing against enlisted. I was enlisted for 11 years before Igot my commission inhe army Guard. My father was enlisted in the USAF for 26 years. I work with youths interested in the military and I tell them that if you want to be apilot youneed to go to college and get into ROTC or go to one of the Acadamies. Many people think you have to enlist and go to basic training. The officer world and the enlisted world are completely different. You dont have to go do basic training to be an officer, but you have to be an officer to be a pilot.

Eventhough I am in the army, I dont really push youths to joining the armyif they want to fly. I really promote the Air Force or Navy mainly because I like fixed wing. My original goal was to be a Air Fore or Marine ilot but my vision knocked me out of that and now I am too old. I wshi I had known about the other opportumities in military aviation. If I were to do it all over again, I probably would have become a navigator or NFO. I tell young people toget all the information they can before making a decision that will effect them for the res of their lives.

Can I ask you why you would be a navi/NFO if you did it over, that sounds interesting...

Because currently, I am an Infantry officer in the National Guard. If I became a Nav or NFO, at leasr I would be in the aviation environment. Plus Nav's get command time which is important to me. My goal was to be a career officer to be a General. I didnt think Navs could get command time like pilots did but I see they do.

So, you see, I didnt just want to fly. I like the military as a whole.

That's cool, INFANTRY!!! I'm an 11C, how are Officer promotions in the NG? I recently got picked up for WO board, awaiting orders....

I dont know anything about Warrent Officers. Atough I heard they get promoted every five years. In the officer world. Its pretty much aligned with active duty. As long as you are getting good OER's, you should be fine. Why do you want to fly helicopters when you could fly jets in the Navy?

Helicopters are a blast to fly. I'm a civilian and gave rotor flying a try about a year ago. The only thing that stopped me from completing a commercial helicopter add-on rating was finances. Personally, I would rather fly fling wings for a living than fixed wing. It's just a matter of personal taste.
