To renew or not.....

Hey Doc, I was looking for some personal advice. My SI medical is about to expire. I have to take tests on an annual basis, and submit them to the FAA and then get my medical exam by the AME. However, I just did the testing portion, and everything is normal. I'm looking for advice as to whether I should renew my medical or not. Reason being, is that I will be in school for a profession other than aviation right now, and I will not be using my flight privillages until graduation. Just to busy, and costly at the moment. Now, if I let this medical expire, will this hurt me in the long run when I go to the AME again for a medical, or will it just pick up where it left off? Just wondering what you thoughts are at the moment. Thanks Doc, I appreciate your advice, etc. Take care.:)

It depends on who at the FAA looks at the record in 2-3 years. They may suspect a health related event occurred and ask you to start over. I would keep on the current schedule. You NEVER want to attract attention to yourself when dealing with a government agency (that is why I don't drive a red car:laff:)

Hey Doc, on the same subject. I'm anticipating moving again very shortly, 1500 miles from my current AME. I had a medical previously revoked by the FAA, fought hard and won it back (1st class full privileges). My current AME has all of my medical records. How big of an issue is this when I see a new AME for renewal? Can I request all medical documentation from my current AME without much hassle to him? Worst case scenario I'll buy an airline ticket and see my current AME to keep it current (I do not care to go through a future denial/reinstatement process). Thank you!

First, you should have kept copies of everything submitted to the FAA. Second, since you have a Special Issuance, the letter from the FAA will outline what the AME can do. You will need to fill him/her in but it should not be a problem. Again, find someone who does a lot of physicals, not just 2 or 3 a month.

I'm confused with the special issuance does it mean if you check yes for mental health, back pain, and or high blood pressure you can still get a class one medical? Of course I know that some things like seizures disqualified.

When you check a Yes on an item, it may be OK without a Special Issuance. Special Issuance is what the military term "waiver". The condition is DQ in the regs but the Federal Air Surgeon has the authority to grant a medical certificate with conditions; i.e., Special Issuance.
