To Hell and Back on a Turboprop

[ QUOTE ]
People just don't think.

I just got an email from someone telling me that I must be some kind of right wing nut because I said that deregulation was successful. And that, oh, by the way, safety has been compromised.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ok, now stop that. This is an area I agree with you on and that is unsettling.

And if that guy keeps calling you a right-wing nut, just forward them to me, I'll set them straight.

No, man, seriously, I don't think ANYONE could say that deregulation has failed to accomplish what it was designed to do. It definitely has opened access to air travel up.

Hell, flyover, how does it feel to have another Georgia native that you normally don't agree with, Jimmy Carter, on your side?

The lack of knowledge on the part of some people is frightening. Calling deregulation the spawn of right wing wackos when Jimmy Carter did it is just ridiculous!

Alright, now you are insulting me. I am not a Georgia native.

And as for Jimmy, even a stopped clock is right..........

Ah, yes -- I remember the Jayhawk now. Kansas?

And let's not be too harsh on Jimmy. He's done a lot of good things, and deregulation was one of them.

Yeah, OK, I'll let it go at that. Remember, I lived it.

Went to school at Kansas. My home state remains a secret on the insistence of my handlers in the witness protection program.

Keep in mind, not all of these flights leave from DEN.

I personally had the DISpleasure of flying a BAe146 from MSP-ASE (Well it was SUPPOSED to land in ASE). Don't get me wrong, I like the -146s, but they are about as slow as a Dash8. 2 and 1/2 hours from MSP to the hold at DBL (For :45 minutes), then diverted to GJT where we would be put on two charter buses. Upon arrival it is announced that the lavs on the buses are INOP for the 2.0 bus ride to ASE. Did I mention the arrival time in ASE was supposed to be 22:30m?

To make a short story longer. It was even more pleasureable (extreme sarcasm) to be in uniform on a bus full of PO'd passengers for two hours.

I applaud Mr.LeRoy for his response. However......

We regularly fly at 25,000 feet - that's not very low in my opinion.

FL250 is quite low.

...most of the Dash 8s were built ...using the same state-of-the-art technology used on modern jets.

I never thought I would see "Dash 8" and "state-of-the-art" in the same sentence. Oxymoron?

I went through a similar experience in uniform. For the last hour or so I was in an alert, defensive posture as I was sure the lady across the aisle from me was going to lunge for my throat. To help matters, the few PAs the cockpit and cabin crews made were bad and only threw fuel on the fire. After each announcement she would turn beet red, start breathing heavily and stare at me.

You obviously haven't been in one of the new Dash 8s.

They are very high tech now.

You're right. I just checked out a Q400 on airliners, quite an improvement. I have only riden on the 100, 200 & 300. Not many Q400s on my side of the country. Anyone fly them besides Horizon/Alaska? Even flying around the US I don't see very many.

I have also blasted him an email... I think he gets the point, but dont expect much of an apology.

No I don't

It takes me 100nm to get the O2 mask back in that little box.

100nm is only .3 tt

But I would do FL290-FL310 for a :30-40 min flight.

I got an email back from Mr. Stone, almost immediately after I sent one. Here it is:

"That ticket" is a little misleading. I fly back and forth between Denver
and Aspen (or Eagle) pretty often. Most of the time, it's just the first
and last legs on a longer trip. They were offering a low-season special of
$90, but I was never able to grab that fare. On the occasions when I have
just bought an ASE-DEN or EGE-DEN round-trip in recent years, those
tickets have cost between $300 and $500. It ain't cheap.

And, by the way, the cost of a flight is exactly the same, regardless of
the equipment — Dash 8 or Bae 146.

And, finally, I never "belittled" the safety of the Dash 8. That wasn't
the point.

[/ QUOTE ]He must be doing something wrong. With 30 sec. of searching, I found roundtrip tix for DEN-ASE and DEN-EGE over the New Year's weekend in the $130 range.

I just looked up prices for a roundtrip ticket DEN-ASE for this Friday-Monday and found the rates to be $530 and up. He's probably buying the tickets on short notice.
