To Drive or not to Drive...

I drove all the way from Washington (are you in Shelton WA?). Definitely recommend it. It's nice to have a car down here. Stayed in two hotels and killed one coyote with the car.
Of course I'm lucky in that I graduate on a Thursday, so Friday is my "one day" to get back, but then I have the weekend too :)

Yeah, I think it's kind of ridiculous that you only get 1 day off before you're supposed to be working at your assigned facility. Seeing as how it takes 30 hours to drive there!! (mine also WA) So there must be some leniency.

I think the leniency was them giving you the choice to fly here and back on their dime :( We have a 20 hour drive and we don't have a weekend to work it in...we are thinking of just getting a bunch of rock stars and sharing in the driving/sleeping and just drive straight through on the way back. Not sure if we will or not, but it is definitely being thought about. 8 hours of it the kids would be sleeping so that would make it a tad easier.

Oh and by the way, another reason to have a car...you can drive route 66....it is historic :) You can also go so some of the different parks around town and play frisbee golf.

We are actually bringing two cars. ( van for the wife and car for me) We are coming from SLC and afterwards heading to midland texas so we are just bringing every thing with us. Oh and I talked to someone at my facility and they said that they will work with you if you have a long drive back. So for instance my class ends on a wed june 24th and I asked if i could have till monday to report so that i have thursday to drive there and the weekend to unpack. They seemed to have no problem with it at all. So you should all ask about it if you are worried, cant hurt right?

You get a standard one day off. However, everyone has 64 hours (8 work days) that they can use if they need to for up to two years. It does not come out of your annual or sick leave. It this there so you can take your time when moving or getting your cable set up/drivers license changed etc. My class PVs on this Thursday and the earliest anyone is starting at their facility is Wednesday, Feb. 17. I'm starting Feb. 23, b/c I have a two day drive home and 1/2 a day drive to my facility plus need family to help with the move on a weekend etc.

Oh ok, that's not too bad at all then! Sounds like there's no reason to get all work up. I just didn't know all the details. So thanks for sharing!!

If you arrive at your facility later because you take extra leave for moving, does that affect your seniority if other people are reporting right away and you get there a few days later?

From what I understand, seniority starts the day you report to your facility...so if someone reports before you they will be higher up the totem pole. Wish it wasn't so, because I'll have to take the extra time to get from FL to CA.
