Titanium pins and flying through a front

Gone West
8 years ago I pulled my left arm out of the socket rock climbing; it was bad.

In order to reattach the arm the surgeon drilled titanium studs into the bone to re-attach the ligaments. Now every time a significant front is passing, or I am flying through one, I feel it as a sharp ache. Its not debilitating, just painful. I have reported the surgery on every medical application and the only questions were am I still on any drugs from it, and do I have full function in the arm (I do).

Is this uncommon? Is this something I should worry about, or just live with?

Thanks Doc

It is the result of the injury. You will probably have it all your life. Now there will be no further need to check the weather channel, just listen to your shoulder for weather changes.:laff:

Its real damn accurate too

Thanks Doc

PS: just curious, so is it the metal to bone, or is it the tissue damage?

Does that set off metal detectors? I have two titanium rods in my pinky and will be flying commercial soon.

< I think we've pretty well exhausted the "Ask A Flight Surgeon" elements of this topic, so I'm moving it out of the good doc's forum and into General Topics. >

I had a pin reattach a ligament in my knee, but every time I serviced a Halon Fire Suppression System in a MRI room, I sweated bullets. If a Giant Magnet machine can snatch a hammer or wrench out of your tool belt, a pin is a small stretch further.

I have rods, screws and a cage in my lower back and I can almost give you a 1 hour window as to when weather is coming in!

Bd i completely understand, i get the same issue from my knees two torn acls and 4 pins anytime the weather gets cold they let me know. To answer Matt's question it shouldn't set the metal detector off i've had all 4 of my pins since i was seventeen and ive never set off any metal detector including the wands.

Ben I also have a steel rod in my left leg. Broke it running after a shoplifter. Everytime a front moves threw or having to go past TSA it hurts. I just take a couple of aleave(sp).

Titanium in general should not set off metal detectors. It is non ferrous, and also a low density metal with low zinc content.

It's a decent idea to pic Ti for wedding bands and such, it won't swell with pressure changes, and won't bring you closer to beeping in the tsa line

I had a titanium ring, and the guy said if I got in a car wreck and it was stuck in something they would have to chop off my finger...
