Tips for Staying Cool/Hydrated While Instructing

Seriously??? None of you guys use these?? Strap to the back seat, and off you go.

It's what we use in the race car, because if you think Texas heat is bad, try doing that in a race car.

Seriously worth every penny...

Yea, heck, let the student cook. Builds character ;)

Seriously...I was laid up after some surgery a few years ago, and they gave me something similar that wrapped around the surgical site. They really do work, but make sure all the connections are tight and avoid prickly objects...like cats.

But that cooling gap kept me so cool! /sarcasm

Nothing like roasting in the Twin Star on a hot summer day. Fortunately, I did mostly XCs and high altitude air work so it stayed cool most of the time.

Today was one of those days....

Throw a couple of water bottles in the freezer the night before. They will slowly melt and stay mostly ice cold all day the next day. This worked for me when I instructed in Arizona. At 1600. In the summer.

One of the more senior instructors I worked with in Phoenix made a makeshift AC unit with a small fan installed into a cooler loaded with ice water. As silly as it sounds, it felt amazing for all of the 20 minutes the cool air lasted.

Bring a spray bottle and spray water into the air vents. Pour water over yourself and wear wet clothes. Drink constantly. That is how I survived teaching landings in the desert heat.
