Tillamook Air Museum to remain closed from storm damage

Port of Tillamook votes 4-1 to not provide a funding match to FEMA funds, or any funds at all, for repair of the storm damaged WWII airship hangar that suffered a 200’ x 30’ hole during a storm. That damage forced closure of the Tillamook Air Museum located inside. The museum will remain closed indefinitely.

This hangar is one of the last few remaining large airship hangars in the US that are the largest wooden structures in the world, after a similar hangar at the former MCAS Tustin, CA, burned to the ground a few years back. However, the cost for repair of the damage is indeed very high.

Developers believe that the hangar is not worth the repair and should build high end historical condos instead and their legally purchased politicians should vote accordingly

Sucks we used to go there quite often. Always blew my mind at the vastness of the hangar. All the dimly lit aircraft in the cold damp environment was also a different experience than any other museum I’ve been in.

Went there a few times on road trips growing up and loved it. I’m glad I went one last time as an adult a couple years back. I guess preserving history does have a price tag in this case.

I visited as a kid a couple of times on family road-trips. Tillamook was a cool stop, we'd go to the blimp hangar and then head for the dairy facility. They used to offer tours that included samples of very fresh cheese (my dad was a big fan of Tillamook sharp cheddar and I can't remember a time that there wasn't a brick of it in the fridge when I was a wee scamp) and ice cream. Besides the free dairy products that area is spectacular regarding the geography, I'm kind of surprised that a wooden building that size lasted that long in that environment. Are there any of those hangars still standing?

“Dairy facility.” How about “kid heaven?”

Also, when I came back as an adult I rented an old Porsche on Turo and took logging roads to get there. 11/10, would do again. More buttons on the car than the jet I took into MMV.

It's not a refinery or a distillery, what do you call a dairy factory? I looked it up, it's actually called a dairy factory. It is what it is. They make some fine dairy products in Tillamook.

We visited it a few years ago on a trip. Looking at the structure, and the seeming frequency those things seem go up in smoke, we figured we needed to make the trip while it was still standing.

Glad we made the trip, but it was, ahhhh, drafty 7 moist already, and that was several years ago.

Very sad, though.
