TIER 1!

lol I like how they sent two mechanics. There isn't much they could have done had any serious problem arose. I'm suppose Mr Murphy didn't appear on that flight.

I know right? You don't plan for that and NOT encounter problems

Sounds like a "block or better" situation.

"So here's the plan. We're going load up on gas and fly around for a long time then go to a safe alternate. Sound good?"

If you tilt the radar down, it'll paint any obstacles...I mean ships that might be out there. Is there a radar altimeter? BONUS!

I thought the media blew this out of proportion. From what I read the weather on arrival was, it's no more of a threat than any other storm we all deal with this time of the year. I'm sure they evaluated it just fine. For those who turned back and didn't trust it, good on them too.

Anyways....I want to know of any passenger was on board that flight. Knowing and willingly going into a city that 3-4 hours after arrival is going to get absolutely obliterated by a Cat 5 hurricane. Lol.

Per the article there were 30 passengers on board the inbound flight

Geesh, come on. Plenty of fuel, mainland alternates, why not go take a look. Like the title says, Tier 1. Don't got the stones, stay on he porch with the puppies.

Try anything, once.

It's not a big deal to launch into the face of something like that as long as you've got a whole bunch of good alternatives if it doesn't work. I flew a Charlotte to Freeport flight in 2011 just as Hurricane Irene was running in to the Bahamas. They gave us enough gas to get there and back (twice!) and we were supposed to get in just about 45 minutes before the outer bands of the rotation started hitting the island. We managed a 30 minute turn and took off with blue skies but a huge hurricane bar just to the east. We took two mechanics with us to QUICKLY solve any problems that might have came up. Total non event. Storm location forecasting is pretty good now and you can always turn around (did that once in 2009) too if it doesn't look good.
Largely agreed, and thanks for letting some of the hysteria out.

No big deal... the 739 has the multi-scan radar which is top shiite. Good dispatching, good planning with back ups, plus the bad part of the hurricane was passing well north. Tier 1, fools.

We fly into far worse into Mecca on any given day in July...

Thank you!

When you see how hysterical the media gets about a subject we are expert about, makes you wonder all accurate all the other stuff they talk about that you're not so knowledgable about are.
