Those kinds of people

I went to my local FBO today to get a sign off to rent their aircraft, the CFI and I started talking about the cost of flight training.
He ask me if I had apply for scholarship because I'm a minority, and there a bunch of help for "those kinds of people".
Them he went on to say that I have an advantage with the airlines because they always looking for minorities (his coments "you know because of affirmitive action they want to hire minorities".
Here I am busting my F**** A** working my Butt off to get my ratings and is this the kind of attitude that I going to get in this industry.
I didn't say anything to him, I will like to think that he made those coments out of ignorance.
Is that the general attitude toward minority in the industry?

Nope. There's ignorance everywhere, though.

Not the general attitude, but it is out there. Expect it, but don't let it slow you down.

Yeah there are fools out there. But you are a bigger fool if you don't take advantage of what is offered.

I had several black students at ATA who did not want to join any of the black pilot groups because they wanted to "make it on their own."

Here was my speech:

1) Everyone is going to think you did it anyway.
2) You get enough abuse from bigotry I see no problem with taking advantage of an opportunity.
3) How are you going to change anything unless you get involved?

Well said, JT. It's the truth. There is something to be said about somebody that wants to make it on their own, but I encourage folks to seize legitimate opportunities!!

You should have asked the CFI how can the airlines tell by a resume if one is a minority or not? Getting the interview is the hard part, they can't tell if you're a minority 'til you show up.

Good call.

Hmmmm I get told that by alot of people in the industry and not just at CFI's at FBO's that I stop in to.

When I worked for Delta as a ramp rat in CVG when I would be on break and talk to either a Delta or Comair pilot most would say that I had it easy as a minority.

A friend of mine also just got hired with American Eagle and just finished training for the ATR.

He also makes similar comments that there is alot of money out there for minorities in aviation.

And that when I get done with my ratings and education that it will be all downhill for me when it comes to airlines because I'm black.

Does honestly kinda bother me but as was said in here I'd be a big fool to not take advantage of the opportunities laid out for me.

what do you mean?
A couple of years ago I made the decision that I needed to do something with my life.

At the time I just had separated from my ex-wife and I wasn’t happy at my job. I decided to work
part time, to go to school full time to finish my degree and pursue my dream of becoming a pilot.

I have not joined any organization yet and I have not received any scholarships from anyone.

Perhaps the only advantage that I have is that I speak to languages and other than that, I don’t know of anything else that will serve to my advantage.

But if you guys know of anything else that I can use to gain a competitive advantage I will like to hear that.

There are all kinds of attitudes in flying just as anywhere else.

There have been minority opportunites in flying. The most notable was UAL which had a high-proflile minority hiring effort going.

My experience at my airline has been everyone being their based on merits.

I have also been privileged to fly with some of the people who broke the color and gender barriers. Most of them handled things with a lot of humor. It's the best way to put a jerk in his place. It let's them know that they can't touch you.

Also I've counseled some minority aviators. My advice was to use any advantage you can get, then make damn sure you show your worth when you get the chance. Of course that applies to everyone in every stiuation.

Don't let that stuff get to you. You know who you are and where you're going.

If people want to give me a break because of my skin color, I sure as hell ain't gonna turn it down. I'll take every edge I can get because other people use them too.

For example, if George W. Bush wasn't the son of a President.....
