This really sucks, especially since I was a Police
Officer in Calif. and now I am student pilot.

The First Crash:

COLUMBIA, Calif. - Two people died when their plane crashed in the heart of California's gold country Monday, and a sheriff's deputy was killed as he was speeding to the scene to help them, authorities said.

The small Piper aircraft registered out of Gardnerville, Nev., went down at about 11 a.m., shortly after taking off from the Columbia airport. Witnesses say the plane sputtered and fell to the ground, bursting into flames upon impact and starting a small brush fire that was quickly extinguished.

A veteran Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department deputy responding to the plane crash lost control of his vehicle on Highway 49 and slammed into a tree, said Sgt. Roger Dittberner. The deputy's name was withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

The deputy was a 15-year veteran of the force and had worked in law enforcement for 26 years total, Dittberner said.

The deputy was pronounced dead at 12:14 p.m. at the Sonora Regional Medical Center.

National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration officials were making their way to the plane crash in the afternoon to investigate.

Columbia is located about 60 miles east of Stockton.

Very sad. A couple of weeks ago we had a deputy killed here in Hillsborough County while on his way to a domestic violence scene or something like that. It was the first deputy killed in the line of duty in this county in 25 or 26 yrs, I can't remember exactly. Either way very sad.

Sorry to hear about these unfortunnate tragedies. These brave men and women will always be remembered for their service. May the families and friends of the people flying and the officers be comforted.

Ummm - not exactly true.

1. There was a female officer, Lois Marrero shot and killed June 6, 2001 here in Hillsborough County.

2. On May 19, 1998 Hank Earl Carr shot and killed two police officers Detective Randy Bell and Detective Richy Childers after being arrested.

3. Officer Norris Epps was shot and killed on January 18, 1995.

4. Officer Porifio Soto shot and killed on December 30, 1998.

And that is just the Tampa Policed Department.

From the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department:
Officer David Abella was the first Hillsborough County Sheriff killed since 1987. Perhaps that's where you got your info.

Tampa/Hillsborough county has one of the higest crime rates in the South.

At any rate, - TRULY sorry to hear about the deaths of the pilot, pax and officer!!! Never a good day when lives are cut short.

rv7 was correct in his statement. He specifically states "deputy" which implies an Officer within the Sheriff's Office. Not all law enforcement officers are deputies.

[/ QUOTE ] Thanks for the defense cavu4u. Now that you mention it R2F I do remember when those cops were killed by Hank Earl Carl. I just remembered when I heard the news story (it was the crappy news channel 10, which I can't stand..go Fox 13) that they said something to the effect of, "it is the first Deputy killed in the line of duty in Hillsborough County in 26 yrs," but I don't remember how many years exactly..I just thought I remember hearing it was 26. Anyhow, thanks for "correcting" me and I'm gonna make it over to TPF one of these days and introduce myself.

R2F, I didn't know you fly out of TPF. I had the opportunity to fly out of there last summer and found the airport to be awesome! Hell of a view landing there with the Tampa skyline in the background.
