Thinking of moving closer to EWR....

So I'm contemplating moving within a 1 to 1.5 hour drive of EWR instead of doing the commute from Florida… The commute isn’t bad but I’ve got nothing really holding me down and it seems like the peace of mind living close to your base can’t be beat.

Anyway, what I need is to know what are good areas to live in based on the drive time I posted above. If it's a little further but worth it then please throw it out there. I know ZERO about the surrounding areas so if anyone has some suggestions I am all ears.

I'm not terribly familiar myself, but I know we have a few guys from the Allentown, PA area that make the drive to EWR. Its around the drive time you put down and from what I hear, affordable and a decent area.

I'm from the area. ABE area to EWR will be around an hour or so without traffic I would say. Account for traffic and add a half to that time. If you're young, the bar scene in the Morristown area is really good and a lot of fun, however its pricey to live there. I lived out in north western nj near the Delaware Water Gap and believe or not, its beautiful out there. Its a little cheaper however your commute is a little longer. If you like outdoor stuff (hiking, biking, rock climbing, kayaking), that will be the area to live in.

Personally, the EWR area is nasty to me and I would avoid it like the plague.

Del Water Gap is a beautiful place. Would love to live up near High Point State Park around Sussex. If you can go a little further out than 1.5 hours, Wilkes Barre, PA might be an option too. Buy some snow skis.

Depending on your budget, you could find some places fairly easily within 1-1.5 hours from EWR on the Shore. You'll have tons of stuff to do and the commute will be easy (Parkway to the Turnpike, all highway, and you're at EWR). There's gazillions of rental homes and apartments, and the prices often plummet in the winter since the area will empty out.

In Hamilton, you're 45 min to an hour south, on the turnpike. A nice one bedroom would be @ $1200. There's also a train that you can take right to the airport if you needed.

There are several pilots based in EWR, PHL, and JFK living in the area.

Not saying it's better or worse then anything else suggested just offering the info.

Let me know if you if you need anything more specific, lived here my whole life.

Got friends just over the border in PA. Aside from the outdoors and lower taxes...there's not much there. Morristown is nice. Some places off the parkway, like Barneget, keep close enought to EWR for a weekly commute and still affordable.

Hamilton is nice too. Raised in A-town, north Jersey now. Need to drive down and get a tomato pie soon!

I've lived in Monmouth County (Freehold) and Mercer County (Lawrenceville). I'd look around in those counties. Central NJ is much less crowded and much nicer (IMHO) than the areas around EWR. They're about an hour-plus drive depending on traffic.

For that price I'd suggest moving across the border to the PA side. Same rent and commute time, but your insurance and taxes will be much lower. Look into middle to upper Bucks Co.

As an alternative to PA, I'd consider some areas near the Jersey Shore. A real nice area just south of EWR (45 min) is Red Bank. Further south is Toms River.

Depends on what your looking for. If you enjoy the diversity and urban lifestyle, then check out Jersey City, North Bergen, Palisades Park, and Rutherford in North Jersey. . Anything close to PA border is very rural, and quiet. Middlesex County is close to EWR but more suburban and not bad IMOP. I live in Union County.

I grew up in Sparta, NJ. Very nice area up there.. farm land, mountains, lakes.. all close. It's also known for it's large pilot population, so it must work pretty well for EWR.

You could head down towards the Philly suburbs in NJ and SE PA...about a 1 hour down the turnpike from EWR. I grew up in Camden County and depending on where you go, it is one of the nicer parts of Jersey.

Just avoid Camden, Gloucester City, Lindenwold, and Lawnside. Bellmawr, Mt. Ephraim, and Runnemede are nice quiet towns with a decent cost of living.

essh. Stay above the 195 line. Less Philly/Eagles fans. It's a different type of ppl south of it. haha. Coming from someone who was raised on the 195 line, lives N of EWR, and works at ACY. I've gotten to see it all.

I second the Gap, we have quite a few pilots and their parents living up around there. We also had one that used to live in Scranton. To me Scranton is a litle like going back in time but it is dirt cheap. We also have a few pilot who live in Allentown and drive it. Love living there and no complaints.

Yep, I'm one of 'em. The Lehigh Valley (Allentown and surrounding areas) is about a +/- 1 to 1.5 hr drive to EWR. The cost of living is a little better than Jersey. Nice area and plenty to do.

You mean it's a better type of PPL South of it ;)
