Thinking about if I really still want to be an airline pilot

Re: Thinking about if I really still want to be an airline p

And always be prepared to grab an opportunity when it presents itself. Having a nice suit and tie helps sometimes.

Re: Thinking about if I really still want to be an airline p

Lemme re-phrase that. Is there anyway I can get an iPhone without having to pay extra $$$ a month for something I won't be using? I'm on the family talk plan. Adding a line for two years would be about the same amount of money in the long run as paying the extra cash for the iPhone. I'd just be paying in monthly installments.

True, but you can look at it as an interest free loan:D When was the last time you renewed your contract? My experience with AT&T is you're eligible for an upgrade one year into your 2 year contract if you extend your contract another year.

Do what makes you happy. Period.
:yeahthat:Exactly what I was going to say. :) Life is too damn short, make the most of it and all that jazz, especially while you're young and have no major commitments.

It'll be a year in about two weeks. I was gonna just wait and see what happens when half the contract is up. I've got no problem extending it. I've always had good signal and service pretty much everywhere I've gone with Cingular/AT&T. Had the same number since about 1999, and they'll have to pry that 407 area code outta my cold dead hands. Worst case scenario, I'll probably just get a refurb 3G for about the same price a new 3GS would cost if they don't offer a deal after the year is up.

Haha yeah I'm hanging on to my Dallas number likewise. You should be good to go then in two weeks. I have 4 lines on my family plan coming up for upgrade in August. Everybody seems content with their phone so I'll probably get 4 of whatever new iphone is going to be out by then, keep one, and eBay the other three.

Speaking of new iPhone, you might want to hold off on the 3GS for at least a month until the Apple rumblings are clarified. Don't wanna get screwed like the people that bought the iPhone 3G before the price dropped 100 bucks when Apple announced the 3GS

I'm right there with ya man. I'm about a month or two away from my comm single and while that should be exciting as all get out I can't help be read all the hate that is on this site about how miserable the career is, the job is great but the career seems to suck. Plus I gotta think about starting a family soon and while I have a degree outside of aviation I haven't been active in the field in years so it's basically no good any more. Plus I found a career I'm starting to get really interested in and so now I'm torn between follow the new path, get back into my old path, or charge ahead with flying. Luckily I don't have to make that choice tonight, but soon.

Re: Thinking about if I really still want to be an airline p

What sucks about other industries is that they cut people at the top sometimes.

25 years at a bank and this person was let go, along with his dept.
Same local bank is cutting middle managers.
My dad is #5 of 70- some (maybe more now) employees and might not have a job next year.

Some say "well they can go find other jobs in their field" except that, just like the airlines, not many companies are hiring right now.

This stuff happens in every industry when the economy goes into a slump.

I know a guy that was hired the day he got his comm. Another guy from my school is right seat part 91 medium sized jet and graduated just a year ago. I've had mine since comm single summer and already have 2 potential jobs, and 2 places are telling me to get my CFI so I can get hired; not dream jobs but its a start.

Re: Thinking about if I really still want to be an airline p

Hey, speaking of that....I want an iPhone, but AT&T wants something like $500 for one since my contract isn't up. Too bad, as it would appear, staying with the same cel phone carrier for 10+ years nets you zilch in the good will department. Any programs someone with a year left on their contract can go with to get a halfway decent break?

</hijack>

I'd really wait til this summer anyway man.

Though, to be honest, don't hate At&t for the pricing requirements. Speak with Apple. It is the one device we can not wave our magic wands for. As a matter of fact, dealt with three unhappy people today who just thought we could throw the kitchen sink towards Apple to make it happen. Nope. All three threatened to goto Verizon, even after paying (the lowest of the day) a $455 early termination fee. I swear, some people don't recognize their emotions. :(

But, don't go off your "regular" upgrade eligibility window. Need to look into the early-upgrade option for the iPhone. It's not the full $400 off full retail, but it's $200 off. Still a savings, and if you're the primary line and have less than a year to go, you should be able to do that.

And send me a PM with your response. Really don't wanna clutter this up.

I'm not saying i wouldn't enjoy the job, I know I would, and I know there is a lot of potential at the airlines, just not sure it's worth the ride. Not to mention, don't pass a medical, and poof, on the street. I'm just not sure it's what I would want to put a family through. I think I could go in another direction and make money and fly on my own, maybe get a quarter share or join a club or something. I just gotta sit down and add up all the pros and cons and see where it stands. And if I do leave aviation it would suck given all the cheese I've spent on it. Maybe I just need to start hearing some good news about aviation careers for a change.

Probably better advice than waiting a month

Trip7 gave me a great life lesson one night, family and the airlines don't really work out to well. IT's a great life when single, with a family? not so much. Maybe something along those lines :)
