They wanna rename SNA.

Didn't the name Fresno Air Terminal change to Fresno-Yosemite a few years back too?

[/ QUOTE ]

Why yes, Mike, it did! In fact, it's now the Fresno-Yosemite International Airport. Where the international flights come from and go to I have no idea. Identifier is still FAT and it'll always be FAT City to me.

Nope. It was to Icelandair. Just giving him the local perspective. Those of us living here when the change was rammed down our throats didn't like it.

And...ahh....guys, there is a Ford field. It's in Grand Rapids (KGRR). It's named after President Ford. So, you could fly from Ford field to...well...anywhere.

Go about your business.

The only answer here is commercializing the naming of airports. How about Coca-Cola or Cialis International?

Which Springfield are the Simpsons supposed to be in? Illinois, Ohio, Oregon, Missouri, Michigan, Georgia?

Or is it supposed to be nebulous?

[/ QUOTE ]
Nebulous.

They've actually had episodes where they joke about the location of Springfield.

[ QUOTE ]
All due respect, but you don't live here.

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't either, but the fact that I've been there about 20 times in the last 4 years makes it my home on the east coast--and, though it did take a while, I've conditioned myself to calling it Reagan National. Many of my friends do too, so perhaps your hanging out with the wrong crowd, eh?
wink.gif

Ya know, it's not Reagan. It really isn't.

It's the bungholes like Bob Barr who talk about the federal government staying out of local government's business who then rammed the name Reagan down the Washington Metropolitan Airport Authority's throat. The locals didn't want it. We liked Washington National just fine.

How would you feel if a Congressman from a district nowhere near your home said, you will name your local airport after this person that we tell you to, and we don't care what you say, and if you fuss, you can kiss funding for a totally unrelated project goodbye?

I don't think you'd like it, and I think you'd like it even less coming from someone who talks about how the federal government ought to stay out of the hair of local governments.

And then after they did this, they rubbed salt into the wound by bitching about how Metro wasn't changing the signs on the subway system fast enough. They got down to that level of micromanagement!

My response? Screw you, Bob Barr. I'll never call it Reagan because of your actions.

It's probably not the most mature response, but there you have it.

Yeah, I'd be upset too if Sen. Dayton pushed a bill through changing LAX to LBJ int'l, however if he picked someone I agreed with politically it wouldn't bother me too much, I might even like it. In any event, the federal gov't does it all the time, especially in DC (though I know DCA is in VA). There's very few congressmen of either party who don't do this kind of stuff. It'd be interesting to see how Ildewild got renamed JFK.

I think the one that is the most upsetting is the new terminal at DTW--McNamara. Most people are like who the heck is McNamara? I'll I've heard is that he's a somewhat corrupt local politician. Perhaps they should call that "The Seven Mile International Terminal" or something hip.

In San Francisco they remaned Army St. to Caesa Chavez. Ask for direstioins to Caesar Chavez St. and you'll get a blank stare. Idiots in power would rather rename streets and appear productive than address real problems.

most people around here don't refer to it as the McNamara terminal, it's usually called "the new Northwest terminal" cause only NW flys out of there, everything else flys out of the Smith terminal. As far as McNamara being a corrupt politician, i have no idea, but probably

Well, what's interesting is that it doesn't look like Reagan would have liked this push to name all these things after him. And from all that has been written about the man, with the stories about how he's a down to earth and humble man, I think the speculation is right. Here is what Nancy Reagan had to say about putting her husband's face on the dime.

"While I can understand the intentions of those seeking to place my husband's face on the dime, I do not support this proposal and I am certain Ronnie would not," she said.

As far as McNamara goes, I think that might be after the defense secretary under Kennedy. I am not sure.

But it just goes to show you how ridiculous this whole naming thing is. It's even more so when it comes from someone who doesn't live in your area telling you what to call things. That's what really irritated me about the whole DCA thing.

And to show you that there's nothing political here, if Georgia's congressional delegation tried to ram something through that changed the name of IAD to Jimmy Carter International (a man who I greatly admire) I'd be just as pissed.

Actually NW, KL, LH, CO, DL (or at least soon) and BA (supposedly soon as well) not to mention Mesaba and Pinnacle all fly out of "the new terminal"--what I call it

Man, that place has more names than anywhere: "welcome to Detroit Metropolitan, Wayne County International Airport; McNamara, Midfield Terminal; Northwest WorldGateway. We certainly hope you enjoy your stay in Detroit or wherever your final destination may be." Poor flight attendants.

I dunno if he was in the Kennedy cabinet, but remember reading that McNamara is still alive and is a prominent local DTW pol, who used questionable methods in getting the new terminal built.

I say let them rename whatever they want to! It's only a name! I know the people in Newport Beach have other names for SNA....

Hell, I let my wife call me anything she wants to, just not late for supper!

My bad bro, I was payin attention, but I clearly said the "Bob Terminal" as being part of the "Enzyte" airport. Not renaming the airport to "Bob"

Supervisor's 'The O.C.' idea never takes off
Outcry ends plan to consider renaming John Wayne Airport after Fox TV show.

By HEATHER LOURIE
The Orange County Register

Orange County Supervisor Chris Norby has backed away from an idea to rename John Wayne Airport after Fox Network's prime-time soap opera, "The O.C."

The change of heart comes three days after the 4th District supervisor floated the notion of changing John Wayne Airport to "The O.C. Airport, John Wayne Field." He never formally proposed the idea to the Board of Supervisors but did enlist a public-relations firm and ad agency to come up with concepts. The firms are doing the work for free.

"It went in a direction I never intended it to go," Norby said Friday. "Sometimes you kind of think out loud about a number of possibilities."

This week Norby's office received 10-15 phone calls from people saying they like the airport's name just the way it is. In addition, The Orange County Register received dozens of phone calls, letters and e-mails opposing the change.

"I think it would be an error," said Don Kelly, 52, of Aliso Viejo. "It seems to me it would be a travesty to have (John Wayne Airport) named after a television show that would come and go."

Kelly wasn't alone.

"Don't you dare name our airport 'The O.C.,' " wrote Gerald Ansel, of Fullerton. "As a native Orange Countian, I detest that TV program and its name even more. Every time I see it used in print or broadcast media, I wince."

The popular TV show, heading into its second season, portrays Newport Beach as "Beverly Hills on the beach. A place built on money, power and prestige."

Norby said he didn't intend to create a controversy – and he never proposed doing away with the name John Wayne completely. He just wanted to add to it

"For whatever reason it went off in a direction that was beyond my limited scope," he said. "It was a trial balloon that crashed and burned."

Orange County Airport was named after the Academy Award-winning actor in 1979, the year he died.

Said Kelly, after hearing Norby had changed his mind: "God bless America and conservatives in Orange County. That's wonderful news."
