The tally is in - The Most Stressful Job of 2012 is...

Better zip up the NOMEX flight suit cuz I'm gonna get flamed on here.... An AIRLINE pilot??? Seriously? There have GOT to be more stressful pilot jobs than an airline pilot???? But then again, consider the source of the report...

Yeah....and look at how much their average pay is too! Why the hell are they complaining all the time? :)

According to the media....

Every small airplane is a Cessna and if you fly for a living you must be an airline pilot...

Airline pilot is above police officer? Ok, this list just lost it's credibility.....:)

One of my old professors, a former cop, said that police work was horrifically dull and boring 95% of the time, and the other 5% you were wishing that it still was.

Well, I'm certainly heartened by the fact that air traffic control is no longer stressful, or at least stressful enough to make the top ten list for the first time in my recollection. o_O

The streamlined application process has made the job, as a whole, a piece of cake. :D

I wonder what the metric was.

Online forum "bitching" quotient? :)

Probably. Whenever I had an FO snivel about being an airline pilot my first question was what other jobs they have held. I've had stressful jobs and jobs that really sucked. I'm sorry, but while we might complain about pay or other issues "airline pilot" was one of the easiest jobs I have ever held. Sucky? Short order cook. Scuba diver ( no, not for recreation). Infantry. Now there is fun. Nothing like sitting in 3' of muck when it is sleeting to realize you need a different career field.
Stress? Leading in the military at any level. Law enforcement. The stress my wife faces when a small mistake is clearly visible on the operating table. Airline pilot??? Even after training I was surprised at how little was involved as an individual pilot in the airlines. Part of what I enjoy about instructing verse airline flying is the daily stress I now face.

Maybe they didn't mean the flying itself, but all the time away from home? The job sure as hell seems stressful when you hear about it from a guy with a 2 leg commute, or even a one leg transcon commute. Of course, that is the commuters choice to live that way. But I can't think of many jobs where the place you work is always changing. Years ago I read a blog written by a guy who used to fly with Xjet. I started reading where he was super excited that he was being based in Socal when the branded operations/Delta flying started. He bought a house, and after only a few months, the company decided "Well, that was stupid", and suddenly he was catching a flight to EWR to get to work. To say he wasn't happy about it would be the understatement of the century, and his reaction is probably why people started passing his blog around. I'll try to find it.

I've never been a police officer or a firefighter... but as a flight instructor and Army Reserve Enlisted Soldier I sure am stressed out a lot! :)

If you calculate how hard your working vs. salary theres no doubt that being a pilot along with an enlisted soldier is at/near the top. As for police officer it can be pretty dangerous depending upon what city your in but I know cops in Chicago and NYC can make over 150K/yr with the generous overtime benefits they have.
