The Payoff for a Successful Interview: A Flying Job and $5000

I look at this as a good thing. It just goes to show at least one regional is desperate enough to give a signing bonus. I've never been offered a signing bonus, but then again I've never been desperate enough to work at a regional.
 
Bonuses are taxed at the same rate as any other income. There is no special rate for bonuses, commissions, etc.
 
They withhold more on the bonus vs regular pay which means you should get more back when you file your taxes.
 
Better get that signing bonus in writing. I remember back in '06-'07 timeframe RAH was offerinng $2500 for those that had their CRJ SIC. We had a bunch of guys from Comair jump ship right after training or IOE. Then they all got assigned the ERJ and none were given the bonus because they weren't assigned the CRJ. Talk about bait and switch, but that's RAH for you.

Ouch. Both because they were assigned the Brazilian tube of terror and because of the promised money that, as usual, doesn't appear...

That's not exactly true.

If the bonus is paid separately as supplemental income, then the whole procedure for taxation is different then normal wages, and it is often higher.
 
Are you guys talking about the rate that taxes are withheld at the time the check is written, or the actual tax rate paid at year-end?
 
I'm talking about the "taxes paid". They may be talking about what is withheld. Two different things. But, they were saying "taxes" not "amount withheld for taxes".

That's why I asked the question. People quite often confuse the two. It's easy to think that a higher rate of withholding means that the tax paid on that type of income is also higher. After all, the withholding shows plainly on the check stub and we can see the higher withholding rate. We forget that at the end of the year all the income (with some other exceptions of course) is lumped together and the tax is computed on the whole shebang.
 
Taxed or not, the signing bonus is still sweet. Much better than some of the training contracts where the pilots actually owe money.

Sweet? Pff... Not when you work for an airline that just doesn't give a rats furry arse about their pilots and have to work under a toilet paper contract. You''re gonna need that "sweet" bonus after just dropping $50k on flight training and making less than $30k your first few years. Awesome bonus! Again, get it in writing if you chose to go there!

That's what I mean, if a regional actually is forced to pay out a bonus to attract applicants isn't that a "good" thing?! More money is always good, if they've been released for strike, then they can have them give the bonuses (helping out some of the new FOs) and then turn around and strike anyway - effectively getting them whatever they want! Republic's Union effectively has RJET by the balls.
 
Despite any little bonus, the religious undertones of this airline would turn me off from ever wanting to work for them. I actually had no idea about their CEO until recently.

I've got a partial inside scoop from a buddy of mine who works there. It's not horrendous, it's just not great, that's why they're in negotiations.
