The OLDEST entering the field?

Alrighty then, first post here. I'm curious to know at what age the oldest career changer you know changed over to aviation.

While he didn't go to ATP, I had a student that was 52, doing Mesa's PACE program. He completed it sucessfully and is now flying the line. He owns two copy shops as well, that helps pay the rent!

I knew a guy who went through ATP's program who was 50. He was an Engineer for Bell Helicopter and decided to become a pilot...

Thanks for making my day. :rawk: A long day at the desk job (Engr) and thoughts that it will be another 2 years + before I could even be close to the hours to get a job flying somewhere.

I thought I would be the oldest, but guess not.

So far, only a couple of useful replies. I was hoping to get some honest, informational - read "not-for-entertainment-purposes-only" - replies. So, if you are "young" you need not chime in on this post.

Kind of tough to get "useful replies" when you really haven't asked any "useful questions". :)

Now, if you have some more specific questions, or would like to share some information about yourself and what kind of plans you are considering, then maybe some of the more "mature" individuals here might be able to give you some feedback that you could actually use. Shoot, might even be some younger folks that have some useful information as well.

I don't know what kind of experience this guy has, but judging by the catty personal attack with the Nanny comment, I'd say he's got The Right Stuff. For Flightinfo.com, anyway. Jeez, these are my peers? :( Hey, bud, no one's going to offer information if you show so little respect. There are 21-year-olds out there with valuable experience and some of them are worth listening to.

All right. I talked to her. My answer is "45 years old". Well, maybe that isn't exactly an answer to the question you asked, since *I* was the one that made the switch at 45, not someone "I know".

I may or may not be older than you. Doesn't really matter, does it? I had one full, very successful career, and am well on my way in a second. I might have some information or experiences that could be useful to you. Might not. Won't know unless you ask.

Ok, the reason I decided that the posts were getting off track and irrelevant, blaming on "young" - read immature - folks - is that Golemember wrote,

Whereas Captain Bob and wheelsup answered my question directly without any nonsense. Thank you Captain Bob and wheelsup.

I thought that the comment by SteveC was equally off-track since my particular circumstances don't affect an objective reply to my question which would simply be a number. Hope that clears it up.

No offense intended - sorry I retorted back rather harshly.
 
rhilberg. Welcome to the wonderful, wacky, and often sarcastic world of jetcareers. Thread creep is a fact of life here so you sometimes have to wade through the BS to find what you're looking for.

I saw your first post but don't really know any career changers. I think a lot would have to do with your expectations out of the career. You want to be a CFI, there is no age limit. The higher up the ladder your expectations are, the harder it's going to be for you to meet them and the older you are, the harder it's going to be to meet them.

There is a seperate forum here for career changers. I'd suggest you ask this question over there.

And for the rest of you. It would be nice if you cut the new guys some slack...

I moved your post out of this thread and opened a new thread under the changing careers forum. It would have been best to start a new thread there vs taking this thread somewhat off tangent!

not a problem.. but you'd get much better responses over there, for sure!!:)

Excellent points - all appreciated! And thanks for the welcome and warning!

Part of the general nature of my question is that I am trying to realistically *adjust* my expectations based on the replies I receive. I'm fairly open minded about a career (or non-career) in aviation at the moment, and before I forge down a path too seriously I would like to form realistic goals for myself and my family and career. Thusfar, I'm pleasantly encouraged.

you know what.. i'm gonna move this up to the career changing forum because it really sounds more like that type of thread vs an ATP thread! in there, you'll probably get a lot more responses. :)
 
It belongs here. I would have done it myself but I didn't want to experiment at being a moderator at a new guys thread...hehe.
