This is Captain Buzz Hazzard, for the Delta MEC Communications Committee on Saturday, January 17, 2009 with five items.
Item one. Today, the 11 Local Executive Councils that now make up the Delta MEC met in Orlando to elect new leadership for the pilots of the merged Delta Air Lines. The Delta MEC now consists of 33 LEC representatives and four newly elected MEC Administration officers.

Captain Lee Moak, a New York based international 767 pilot, was elected to the position of MEC Chairman; Captain Jim Van Sickle, an Anchorage-based 747-200 pilot, was elected MEC Vice Chairman; Captain Bob Hesselbein, a Detroit-based A-320 pilot, was elected MEC Secretary; and Captain Kingsley Roberts, an Atlanta-based 737-800 pilot, was elected MEC Treasurer. The officers assume their new duties immediately.

Item two. As part of the transition to a single MEC, during the week of January 18, the Delta MEC’s current Webboard (Forum) will be reset to clear the Webboard of all messages. Those removed messages will be archived for a minimum period of 30 days in accordance with ALPA policy. While we plan to make this reset a seamless transition, it is possible that the Webboard may be offline for one or more days. In that event, we will make every effort to keep this “downtime” to a minimum.
Item three. In order to provide the Delta Merger Committee with the continued financial resources it may need going forward, the Delta MEC recently ratified Agenda Item 08-100A to create a Merger Dispute Fund financed with the remaining balance of the existing Merger Fund and an assessment of pre-merger Delta pilots hired before the merger announcement date (April 14, 2008). The assessment will be at the rate of 0.25 percent of airline income subject to dues each pay period beginning January 15, 2009. AI 08-100A is posted on the Delta Merger Committee page of the Delta MEC website.

Item four. First Officer Doug Shave, an Atlanta based B767-400 pilot, lost his life in a very unfortunate accident this past September during a layover in Amsterdam. A scholarship fund for Doug’s three children has been set up by Flight Operations through the Delta Community Credit Union. Details on how you can contribute are included in the e-mailed version of this code-a-phone as well as the pdf version which is available on the Delta MEC website (http://www.deltapilots.org).

Item five. Council 16 will meet Wednesday, February 11 at Gulliver’s Restaurant, 10AM – 2PM. Lunch snacks will be provided.

That’s all for this week. Thanks for calling.

Jim Van Sickle?!

I flew with a Jim Van Sickle at Eagle..... wonder if it's the same guy!

In the meantime only former Delta pilots will be paying for the lawsuits from the SLI. Nothing I like more than more money being taken out of my paycheck!

First thing I saw when I entered this was to donate money to the "Shaved Children Scholarship". Threw me for a loop for a second there.

Is Buzz Hazzard from Delta or Northwest? I J/S with a Buzz on NW a few months ago.

Now why can't I have a cool name like that? :D

Definitely glad to see that Lee is remaining as Chairman. They did a good job politically, too: two "original" DAL, two former NWA. Well done.

I ended up jumpseating on red tail to work once and I'm sitting in the jumpseat with this guy giving the FO IOE after he got recalled from his furlough.

The captain's name was Moose, or at least that's what he went by. Wouldn't answer to anything else, just Moose. I tried to call him sir and he corrected me with, "Naw naw call me Moose."

Nice guy, great check airman from what I could see.
