The Mighty DC-10

We don't have a heck of a lot of wing!

Yeah....same here.

Other day, had to come up initial for the break at 300, following the break and into downwind it was gear down, slow to 205 for the base to final turn. Fly that at 200-205, roll out on final to establish 9.5 AOA to touchdown.

Can't afford to float this one......

Hey, MikeD, was the A-10 a "numbers" airplane like this new computer you're flying?

[/ QUOTE ]

In the sense of speed computations, or avionics displays?

For computing landing speeds, the A-10 is a numbers plane. You take a baseline final approach and final turn speed and add 2 kts for every 1K lbs above 30K. You only need to compute final approach, since you need only add 15 kts to that to get final turn speed in all cases.

For the 117, it's pure AOA flying for landing. The speeds you compute are for reference purposes just to crosscheck that the AOA is giving you believable info.

Avionics-wise, it's two completely different worlds. And the training is no easy street either.....nor is being a student again. DE727 could probably attest to all these.

I'm sure military training is a whole lot more demanding than the spoon fed world of us flying bus drivers. We used to have a training center full of former training command folks that wanted us to verbally build the 727, but thankfully there mostly gone.

Mike - do you have to becareful what you say about the F-117 or is most of it out in the open now? Do they have any 2 seat models, or do you learn by the seat of your pants flying? Any chance if you are at a show locally you can give me a tour?

Dude! Coming from Hog speeds, that must feel like being strapped into the X-1.

There's alot of stuff about the mission employment, capabilities, limitations and weapons systems of the aircraft that I can't even remotely talk about. Basic stuff like how it flies, it's basic design, pattern ops, etc, are all unclass. How it does it's job is highly class.

Just like the Hog, no two seat models. First flight is solo. You're chased by a T-38 until you're instrument-checked in the plane (checkride). Basically, for chase takeoff, the T-38 and F-117 taxi out to the runway. The 38 takes off and pulls departure end closed. When downwind abeam the numbers, the F-117 starts it's takeoff roll. The 38 flies downwind to final in a dive and "picks up" chase position on the 117 as it's lifting off. Sometimes the timing gets screwed up, and that's always funny to see.

Yeah, the speeds are pretty high. But having a drag chute on landing sure helps shorten the landing roll. It's darn effective.

What was flying that for the first time like? I take it you had some sim time before soloing. Where you relieved to get it on the ground?

Mike I am not sure if you are married/dating. But if not does the Stealth impress more girls then the hog.

And while you're answering Iain's question, here's another one.

It seems like the Soviets were carving out and adding another IP cockpit to some of their jets for training purposes like in this example:

Would you think that would be a better idea than the US method of first flight/first solo?

that is a MiG-31 and boy is she ugly. Got the job done well though.

MiG-25 Foxbat-C.

You made me curious, so I did a little Googling. Results:

I mean, it's no big deal. Just a minor point, and they do look generally close overall (31 is an evolution of 25). But the Foxbat-C, as a trainer, has the "added" raised cockpit on back.
