The Grand Forks stoke

EMMA!!!!! Everybody, it's Emma broadcasting live from Japan!!! How was the flight??? I see you are already on JetCareers when you should be eating sushi and enjoying a relaxing time with Suntory Japanese Whiskey hahahaha.
Today's our BS day, recovering from the lack of sleep. We were looking for some Suntory whiskey today at the store (in the mall), but we didn't have much luck. It seems like Suntory makes a bunch of different beverages (non-alcoholic). It's going great so far, it's so cool to be here. Cheers from Japan!

i am from Fargo/Moorhead, going to school at UND. I only came here because it was relatively cheap for the quality of school.

Do i want to live in this god foresaken valley the rest of my life? heck no! And in GFK, not a chance. I honestly believe after 1997 the town should have packed up and dispersed. i could go on, but i won't

Don't be so quick homes. I grew up in ND, went to NDSU and UND, and while I was there could not wait to get out. Got out, saw the rest of the country, NC to VA, to Cali, etc, and can now say I am safely back home in a nice MN town. Everyone who whines about ND and GFK have no idea how to entertain themselves without it being at a night club or some ear pounding concert (medicals people!). Cost of living in ND is lower than Cali, TX, NC, NY, or any other place you can think. Where else can you live on 15 acres, drive 35 minutes to work and only pay 250K for the property?

Also, when is the last time you left your door unlocked in Cali and came home to find everything still there?

It's not about clubbing or going to see a rock concert. It's about beautiful weather, being able to see a beautiful country side, mountains, ocean, more kinds of fishing than you can ever imagine doing in ND, places you can actually eat at (umm, can you say Paradiso is the extent to what North Dakotans feel is an good restaurant? that's really sad), driving on windy twisty roads that exhibit sheer California country-side beauty (or fill in the blank for any other state on the west, south, and east).

It may be cheap to live here but your state is no longer wonderful when all you can make as an accountant is $30,000 per year compared to $120,000 in the west and east coast markets...and your house and cost of living is only 1/3 cheaper than those west/east coast markets. Go to salary.com and run a cost of living comparison. You will find that Fargo and Grand Forks is VERY expensive to live compared to the rest of the USA when cost of living proportions to wages is concerned.

But let me say this. If you feel that ND or your MN town is the best place to live for your needs, then it probably is for you.

If you believe salary.com, then airline pilots are making over 100K a year as an AVERAGE. My wife made well over 60K living in GFK and it wasn't as an accountant. If you think 650 to 800 bucks a month for a 3 bedroom apartment is expensive, well I don't know what to tell you. My brothers house (4 bedrooms, 3 bath, 4 car garage, etc) 225K, brand new, in town. Weather, come on, it's chilly from Oct to Dec, downright cold from Dec to Feb, and gorgeous the rest of the year. I'll take a sunrise over a 150 acre field of wheat anyday, especially since I'm the one who put it there!

It's all about perspective, I can appreciate those who come from elsewhere not liking it, but the constant whining I heard as an instructor and now read on these boards, drives me up the wall. If you don't like it, leave, there are plenty of other flight schools in Cali you can go to. I don't say that to be mean or an ass, but it is the reality. You guys are gonna find out real hard when you get into the real world that pissing and moaning about something you know nothing about is gonna get you a good ole blanket party on the ramp.

ps

If you haven't found where to go fishing in ND, (not the river or Devils Lake) then you are not trying hard enough.

pps
OH OH OH, and if you think some chain, brand name, fancy restaraunt is "good eating" then you really are not looking hard enough. Drive 45 minutes west and go into the first small town diner you find, 6 bucks for more food, better service and home cooked. Again, perspective. The only ones I here whininig are "Big City" types who haven't had to work an honest days work in their lives.

Holy cow. A post that started as a way to say, "Nice school, guys!" has turned into a petty "haven't had to work an honest days work in their lives" fest.

It's all been worked out already! Here's the summary: Some people like to live in big cities, some don't. Some like the coasts, some prefer the midwest. In the end, it's good for all of us because life would suck if we all wanted to live in the same place.

And Dugie, I'm a North country boy through and through, but stop throwing insults to the coasties. It won't get you anywhere!

PP,

I didn't throw the first insult, check out jaces other threads, ND people are ignorant because they don't travel??? Come on now, I can appreciate not liking the cold, just like I don't like the heat, but insulting people who came to ND from Europe in the 1940s (what was happening then?) because he/she thinks they are not traveled, come on.

I challenge you to find any posts by someone from the midwest that STARTS insulting Cali or NY, you won't find them.

You hit the nail on the head, some people like the big city, some like the midwest lifestyle, but it's the big city that throw the first stone and whine and moan about it.

Okay okay okay :) bottom line is, certain places are better for certain people. It's just a debate and it won't get anywhere. Let's just leave it at that.

Dugie... where's the small down home-cooked diner? I'd be interested in that.

Cool, cool, I was being a bit hypocritical too. I absolutely hated ND when I was there, but only because I hadn't lived anywhere else, visited, not lived. Plus having a family puts a different perspective on what makes a good home. My apologies for coming off as an ass, I get a little spooled up when people make the same mistakes I did :sitaware:

Home cooked dinner, head about 45 miles west on highway 2, to a little town called Petersburg. My parents used to own the little cafe there in town, and to be honest I'm not sure if it is still there, I haven't been back there since I graduated high school in '95. If that doesn't work, go down to Thompson, hang a right on highway 15 (I think thats the number) and head west to McVille, find the cafe there or in Aneta (sp?). Won't be the fanciest dinner you've ever had, but you will get more than you can eat and it may through the CG out of whack on your next flight.

Hmm... I'll have to try that. I heard there was a Russian restaurant in Erskine, MN. I'm not sure if it's still there or not but I'll have to drive over there. It's not too far away.

SCREW THIS PLACE, I am glad if you like it, but I traveled in the US to many states, and around the world, being that I am a foreigner myself. ND IS SO CRAPY, I would rather go out to the market and shop an extra 2 dollars and get a bunch of great fresh produce than pay cheap simplot price and get a bunch of beets, and ugly woody tomatoes and strawberries. I would rather live in a place when I look out the window I see color, and not white and gray and ice, I would rather live in a place with mountains and curvy roads, I would rather lock my doors and live with real people than fake smiley HI HOW IS YOUR DAY TODAY plastic people, in the end you know they might hate your guts but they don't show it, SO FAKE, I would so enjoy going to a MEGA LOUD RAVE with the top djs on earth or awesome concerts than sit here and churn frozen butter, I would so rather enjoy LIFE, and TO PROVE IT, all people do here in dakota is drink their life away, ALCOHOL is just so amazingly OVERRATED here. DUDE WE GOT A KEG, to get these people to go to a jazz music festival or any great music festival you would need to put a keg there! Because it is the language they speak, not the music the alcohol is the attraction. How many 5 star hotels are in this town? Sheesh, can you even go to a lobby of a beautiful hotel, have a glass of wine, OH NO MATE I WILL TAKE THE PITCHER OF BEER, If you want them to go to a classic music Mozart festival, wait what is that I only know Toby Keith! From lack of fancy to crazy, If you want to hang out with buddies and SPIN and go wild, wait that must be illegal, if you want to listen to music and the latest top charts, oh wait clearchannel owns the whole area, HOW SAD because the only tops songs happen to be what a dumb company and marketing picks! AND IT IS 40 MINUTES COMMERCIAL FREE WOW of same overplayed crap.
Living here is just like that movie pleasantville! I want color in my life. SCREW COLOR, I want 4D involving time and 3D in color. Not white and black and shades of gray, no varaiety. OH ANOTHER THING I'm gonna bash on all the girls here too, all blonde and fat! And same interests, getting drunk, and XL 93 YEAH! The guys, POLARIS AND YAR MY GUN, and thats what it is all about! I'm sorry for bashing on blondes but, this place lacks diversity to the bone!

Infact the group I always hang out with is people from all around, international people, people with great skills or unique interests, the rant club as Angel calls it :P and that is for a reason, and people who just don't fit it here. AND TRUST ME ALL OF US WANT TO LEAVE as soon as we end up putting tons of money in this place and get what we need!

Sounds bitter, but that is the truth of how much I dislike this place

Not to mention I also met the greatest people from ND too, but they just did not fit in dakota. They were a little too sophisticated.

And once again I am not really with the intentions to offend, but this is just the view point an outsider would have.

Well I'm glad you were so upfront about it, just got off the phone with some of my old students who still instruct at UND. They know exactly who you are. Rest assured your name has been forwarded to all my ND bretheren (along with your opinions) who are Captains, FOs and Chief Pilots at various regionals and fractionals. Good luck!

sounds to me like you are comparing a town of 50,000 to a major city, of course you won't find any of what you are looking for here

Whoa Tugrul, you flipped out just a tad too much I think. :) Im assuming you were somewhat just joking around with the tone of what you wrote. That came off a little to strong if not a little irrational. If you weren't kidding, someones gona get ticked off. lol

Most of what you said is true though. None of its neccessarilly bad, just different. Its not somewhere I'd ever want to live for a long period of time, but for some people its probably just great. Just not for us.

First of all, last Monday I made an attempt to go to Aneta but that was cut off due to the fact that North Dakota doesn't know how to clear roads (HWY 15 was bad). So no, it is nearly impossible to visit and go do things here due to ****ty road conditions... other than the beautiful mosquito infested summers.

To top it all off, I am pissed right now because I went grocery shopping in this hick town and I couldn't find watercress for a Chicken Bowtie Pasta with Walnut Infused Watercress recipe I am trying to make... so...

The dumb worker didn't even know what watercress was...I'm like "do you carry watercress here?"... "Ummmmm.... hmmmmmmmm..."... then I go "you know, wa-ter-cress? Do you even know what that is?" ..."Um, I don't know"... She could probably name off all the different brands under the Anheiser-Bush company though.

End of rant.

May I let you know I point out facts upfront as you said, and a person's ethnicity, race, opinions should have no factor, we are not in high school. 'freedom of speech'??

FYI I don't plan on working in the states. But thank you for forwarding the info :) More people need to realize the truth :nana2:
