The Gouge On Training At Flight Express!!

I'm kinda interested to hear how that works. Either they have the worlds best MX or there comes a time when they might ask you to fly a broken airplane. I've only heard good things about FLX so I hope its not the latter.

One thing I always tell guys who are starting thier first 135 gig is that you have to understand what everyones job is.

Its managements job to get the stuff delivered any way they can.

Its the pilots job to keep management in check and CYA. I don't know how good they pay...but it surely isn't enough to replace all the time/effort that went into getting you were youre at. Something as simple as a panel light out, missing screw, nav-light inop, non-stop drilled crack etc.. are all things that can and have gotten peoples tickets pulled.

Its the mechanics job to....well patrol the internet, smoke, and tell really dirty jokes:)

welcome and keep us updated.

Congrats on becoming a Freight Puppy!

Thanks for the stroll down memory lane. It has been 10+ years since I sat in that room in ORL. It sounds like you are off to a good start. Do they still like to demonstrate stalls in a 60 degree turn (C210)? That was a hoot.

No autopilot in our fleet, no GPS, just two VORs, an ADF and a handful with DME. It’s hardcore instrument flying.
Nobody can discount the challenge of flying freight. There is nobody in the other seat (there isn't even a second seat) to help out. There is no autopilot to flick on when things get busy or hairy. It is just you and the airplane. You are going to gain more experience in the next six months than anyone who went straight from a SE to a RJ will in their career.

And it was hot. And, wouldn’t you know it – the airvent in my airplane had just been repaired, but wouldn’t blow any air on me! By the time I landed at the end, I was being blinded by sweat!!!
C210s in the summer and windows that don't open. Yes, it seems that hinged right side windows were an option. Many of FLX's C210s have "fixed" position windows.

Words from those that went before:
Be safe and don't be pushed.
Carry a small notebook and keep notes on what you see and feel in flight (when its safe). I made a few entries like this from my freight dog days and it is very inspiring to go back and read these notes. I wish I had written more.

And stay away from the vending machines!!!!!!

They're very straight forward when it comes to flying illegal stuff: DON'T DO IT!!!

We have a great MX department. Four MX bases and lots of mechs. There are also lots of spare airplanes. So, if the plane is broken, don't fly!! :)

Lloyd, thank you for your gouge. :rawk: I think I will pick up my study habit again. When I was at ATP location. The line guy told and show me few FLX planes - C210. By the way, are everyone at your home OK? :( It looks like Nashville was hit pretty hard by severe weather.

I think it depends on the mood of your instructor - mine did!!
Cool trick, ej? :rawk:

Most non-freight dogs wonder when you transition from freight "puppy" to freight "dog." Although definitions vary, it usually happens after weeks of 1800RVR/VV100, you think 500 ovc/1nm is as good as VFR.

I am still fairly new to freight dawging it in the big scheme of things, but I think it's when you're flying and wishing that you'd have to shoot an apporach again, since I really get bored during VFR wx. I love approaches to mins, and if I don't shoot one in a while, I get anxious and wishing for the wx to go down so I can shoot approaches again.

On a side note, any other single pilot types out there that can't break themselves of saying "we" when talking to ATC? In my defense, I do a lot of IOE and SIC stuff (training the new guys on the routes I've been covering, so I'm not always alone), but when alone, I cannot break myself of saying "we". End of hijack.

Just you + the Van man = we

I love the thought of single pilot hard IFR.

I caught myself doing that about a month ago and quit and just last night I caught myself say "alright" before like half my callbacks........Sometimes I annoy myself.

I did however fly what must have been on of our nicest planes. GPS, HSI, 3 axis AP, Flight director, RMI, on board oxygen, A/C, cup holders and armrests....I didn't know what to do. They told me they were takin it away from me on monday:(

Did you know how to use it all?:)

The cupholders and armrests I got the hang of pretty quick....the rest of that crap I just left off and flew the plane;)

You turned off the HSI??:) I love the Van and Navajo because most have cupholders. Sad that having a cupholder is more important than a good autopilot...I only use the A/P about 1/4 of the time (half of them are pretty crappy anyways). None of the Barons have cupholders :banghead: And, of course, I have almost 400 hours in the Baron now.

Well, what's the latest and greatest from the Marine? Hva eyou had a chance to try not flying through t-storms yet? :D
