The Future of JC

It’s been 25 years.

What do you guys want to see?

Initially, the plan wasn’t to run a website for this long because there’s this big beautiful outside world and it was just started with an online resume, some boredom and an English kid that kept writing me questions when it got features in USAir’s inflight magazine one day.

We have a vibrant offline community, which is fantastic, however, as we’re looking at our third decade, antecedent to the social media revolution I’m not sure if constantly repeating “help each other, be better to each other” is exactly a future-forward game plan.

So…. What are your ideas? Serious question.

There's been a massive shift in hour people learn about the career, which I think was your intent early on. I think there's value to the forum, when people are being open and upfront about questions and what not. Otherwise, it's just an echo chamber and no one benefits then. I know I value the offline friendships and the chat and zoom are valuable to me both personally and professionally. The whole website / forum as a whole? I think it's a lot of effort on your end, which was valid 2 decades ago, but just looking at the jobs section, that used to be hopping, it's pretty dead now.

I believe that the cyclical nature of our industry will always show a need for JC. The aviation industry has just been on such a high recently when it comes to hiring that there hasn't been a need for networking. A space like this will be vital when hiring declines and access to the industry becomes more restrictive.

It really is up to you though. It's definitely been a long run ....and I am just recognizing that I have been a part of it for 20 years now. Time certainly has flown!

I remember that kid (Ian).

There is a huge demand for high school age kids (and their mom's) to learn about piloting careers. I'm on a facebook page that has 18K members. Mostly parents who don't know squat about aviation who kid has shown an interest come there to learn about the career. Would be great if we had people on here tell their career stories on a JC home page that could be linked to.

I seem to remember JC-dot-com actually had something like that at one point.

I think one of the 'threats' is that the forum format isn't really something young'ns really use much. I could be talked out of that viewpoint with actual data, but it's something of an anecdotal observation.

Concur, and it's already happening, but see above re: whether this is the correct venue and modality for that, too. I'm not actually sure.

I really think that this is a message worth getting out, I'm just not sure 1) how well-received that message is likely to be going forward (deadly serious) and 2) how to get that out via this forum, necessarily. The bolded is worth furthering. The community aspect of this place is marvelous and is worth furthering. I just don't know how to do it.

Been here just over 15 years...and have gathered an invaluable amount of info (including working with a bunch of JCer's)

an observation
-I used to see ALOT of time building jobs posted here but not as of the past few years...probably due to the cyclic nature of the industry.
-there used to be more Aviation Technical questions being asked and answered, from basic 172 questions to system logic of a certain FMS...I miss that.

other then that...I could go without the Lav section.

Society is definitely moving towards an "Eat before being eaten" mentality. "Be for self and no one else" is being spread rapidly.

It’s such a great community when we talk about aviation. Politics not so much. You pick up so much about other aspects of the industry. Yes it’s US centric. PPRuNE is the UK/EU/Aus equivalent and is more old school/conservative.

The beauty of this community is that a lot of us grew up professionally here. Unfortunately many of us are so far removed from flying 172's and the like.

We haven't had a "flaps up in the flare" debate in quite some time!

I think the dearth of time-building postings here is probably a function of that plus...there just...aren't a lot of time-building jobs left, oddly.

Dunno, entirely possible (likely) I'm just disconnected.

Ameriflight is still out there surviving as a time building gig. The only difference is that now there are opportunities to go from AMF straight to UPS. This is how far removed we are though. AMF had a deadly plane crash a few months back and I do not believe it was even a post about it here.

Rest in Power, Freight Dog, etc.

But yeah. I know that this place was invaluable for me getting my first flying job. I just don't even know how or where to advise anyone at that level of the business anymore, and AMF->UPS seems like a pretty well-developed pipeline.

I only wish that the pipeline existed while I was there and put in 8 hard years of labor at AMF!

I still hear survey pilots working sectors and such also. Of course there are still youngin's out there flight instructing. A frIend of mine has just become a CFI.

I can honestly say that I haven't encouraged anyone to join the community in some time. It hasn't been done purposely. I've just have gotten complacent in spreading the word about here as I used to.

We have a vibrant offline community,
Ayo, add me to that group chat. 😋

Jetcareers absolutely still has a place to answer straightforward questions, offer “whiff tests” and articulate experiences and perspectives.

I value having a place that is not any of the big social media companies.

If yer looking to be spelled for a while, it’s not Derg Taylor’s SpagoJetcareers. We can help.

Also a forums dragon. Someone that shows-up unexpectedly and zaps stuff and users they don’t like.

No predictability, no rules, no due processes. Just a warning to the “tall reeds” and a mechanism for regrowing the forest.

I’m just here for the free beer and cookies now.

2 years retired, so my well of knowledge on many pertinent topics is getting pretty outdated. Just hanging out now ‘cause I haven’t been kicked to the curb yet, and it’s more fun than folding laundry.

@derg, is there a way to re-focus the website’s purpose just a wee bit? Maybe hatchet job a lot of the existing forums and purposefully focus on mentoring and further developing people within this group, mainly pilots but dispatchers, mechanics, etc., as well. Many/most here are now well established and the problems of not knowing how to proceed in aviation have been solved by most, and it’s a time when complacency can settle in. At this stage people are competent in what they do, but there is always more to learn, but there’s not always incentive to do so. I know that you, and others here, do a lot of stuff in your jobs besides just flying airplanes, and while much of it is presumably proprietary to each company, maybe a way to enable those tools and insights on a peer-to-peer basis might inject some fresh purpose here?
