Re: 4th stripe

You would be good Poster boy... But I suppose all that hinges on how "photogenic" you are! :-)

It is great to see you moving up so quick! How many hours are you up to?

Re: 4th stripe

I've got a whopping 706TT & 123multi.

As for being "photogenic" I wont break the camera! But I could probably stand to lose 20lbs----> (thanksgiving & honeymoon cruise)

That's is pretty good considering the "wait" you had. So you have met a few of the min's, are you applying anywhere, or are you holding out for a specific regional?

Re: 4th stripe

I haven't decided what I want to do yet. I am married now, so that is a big factor. After 9/11 as new pilots we were all conditioned to jump at the very first flying job available. That isn't really the case any more, as more and more jobs are becoming available, at least at the regional airline level. Take ExpressJet for instance. The junior base is in Newark NJ. Most people would hate to live there, but in my case, with my wife's line of work, it may be really good for me. On the other hand there is Eagle, where I could get based out of Miami (when a slot opens up). This would be good too because we have a house in Fort Lauderdale, just a short 30 minute drive North and we wouldn't have to move. Then there are other options with other airlines. I think we as pilots are finally in a position to be a litte picky about which airline we would like to work for. A year ago it would have been a different story. Again this is all at the regional level. I have a friend who is an F/O with American, who survived all the furlough's after 9/11, just to get the call he will be furloughed starting this January.

Re: 4th stripe

Miami is a senior base for AmEagle, doubt that you will get that choice, but you never know. Eagle has changed since 9/11 , your Basic Indoc class might be loaded with northerner's that want to stay closer to Santa Clause and the North Pole. Have you considered Mesa Airlines? Up-grade time is much shorter than Eagle. Keep in mind that you do not have to live in the base domicile. I know a lot of pilots that jump seat home. Could be hard in the first year of probation and especially if you are on reserve.

Re: ** UPDATE **

More news...
Just last week I was selected to start working in the Korean section at Pan Am. I finished stand's last week, and now I am a salaried flight instructor!
The pay is really good, and we work Monday through Friday. When I get hired at a regional I will take a pay cut! I have 3 students who I met today. These guy's all pay for their training the same way we do. If they fail any combination of 4 stage checks or check rides, they are out of the program, and still owe the money. These guy's are highly motivated, and their English is pretty darn good.

Re: ** UPDATE **

Where is the Korean section of Pan Am located now? We (Sierra) just moved into their old building in Livermore.

Re: ** UPDATE **

If you figure the amount of hours I fly each week, times 52 weeks and compare that to my salary, yes I am making more than $22 per flight hour.

Re: ** UPDATE **

dakovich which class were you in, the one w/manny and all those guys? I left pan am in July 02., I probably went to school with you. I just saw Collin today at FSI (houston-hobb) he is finishing up his initial PC with Xjet. Anyways, I was just wondering, marlow is there too if you know him. -Nick

Re: ** UPDATE **

can't say i remember them, but they sound very familiar...i was in with collin, forest, jan and a few other guys. always interested to know how everyone is doing in their careers, and it was great to hear forest and collin got hired. just hope this crappy weather up in buffalo gets better so i can actually build some time flying and get get to where they are...i love instructing, but i'm ready to move onward and upward if you know what i mean. speaking of weather, i'm stuck in new orleans right now because our flights back to buffalo were canceled this morning, sounds like the north east is getting rocked

Re: ** UPDATE **

I waited 8 months for students. But that was before we had the foreign student contracts (Chinese and Korean). The wait time is much shorter now, although IM not sure how long it is. The wait time changes as higher time instructors move on to regionals. This seems to happen in spurts. One month you could have 6 or 10 instructors get hired, then go 6-8 months before that happens again. And that all depends on the airlines.

Re: ** UPDATE **

I waited about 2.5 months at DVT. The people in the January hiring class are already getting students, so that class ranged from less than a couple of weeks to now. I believe the instructor wait will be no existant when the KLM contract gets up to speed and latest Chinese group gets started, which is supposed to happen either this month or in April.

Re: ** UPDATE **

It's been a while so I thought I would resurrect this old thread. I have been with the korean program now for about 5 months and I have been able to build up a lot of time. (almost 1100 TT, 160 Multi) But not much multi, we start multi training at the end of July, after the move to DVT.

But the lack of multi time hasn't kept me from doing some interviews. I was able (through Pan Am) to interview at ASA & Piedmont, and I have an upcoming interview with American Eagle. I didn't get ASA, bummer!

I tried again with Piedmont, and I just got the good news today... Im in the pool!

And I am still going to interview at Eagle as a fall back plan.

No word on when a class date will be, but I hear it could be as long a wait as September.

I'll tell you, if you asked me just 3 years ago, if I thought I would be a CFI, interviewing for a pilot position at an airline, I would have said no way! It's amazing how your life can change if you want it to, and if you work hard at it.
