I'm sure there are if given the opportunity. Heck, civilian where they come from in the first place! I was only taking to task the notion (intended or not) that "anyone can do it with a little training", implying (again intended or not) that it was somehow as easy as getting any other endorsement like tailwheel, complex, etc; when it's really comparing apples and hammers.

I guess I didn't make my statement clear enough. My fault. Not ANYONE can do it, but given the chance i'm sure there are a LOT who could and would.

I know guys at airlines who couldn't pass the physical when they first tried to fly in the military. Its not for everyone, I have some friends from highschool, all great guys who all went to the military with PPLs and close to 100 hours, and all of them were turned down when they tried to get into flying. This "anyone can do it" attitude is BS, I have big respect for anyone who's landed a spot flying in the military. It isn't some FBO we're talking about, its the men and women defending our nation. Show some respect.

I'm no regional pilot, far from it actually so maybee i'm jumping into the wrong fight here.

But it seems to me that it takes a verry large set and an even bigger ego to presume to know what thousands of other pilots want and why it is that they want it.

I have. The government decided which airlines succeeded and which failed rather than the market. It was based upon politics. How do you think Pan Am got where it was? They did not beat the competition by providing a product the masses thought was better, they got where they were by getting the government to stop other airlines from flying their routes.

We as consumers get to decide with our pocket books which airlines succeed and which fail rather than the government.
Sometimes we make the wrong choice- Beta over VCR. But in the end inovation wins out. With the government running things inovation is much less likely to happen. Trust me. I've been in the government. I've never seen any one say "We can do with less money this year." The amount of waste that occurs at the end of a fiscal you would blow your mind.

LOL. Check out any military unit that has $$$ remaining in September of any FY, in order to see firsthand this exact thing happening as they scramble to spend money on unneeded crap.

Uhm. Do a quick search on how much money got doled out to the ridiculously insolvent "legacies" in the wake of 9/11. Then search for how much was given out to, say, SWA or JetBlue. If you think we live in anything even remotely resembling a "free market", you're either blind or willfully deluding yourself.
 
I guess I fit in the "wannabe" category. I won't even set foot at the "other" forum because there are FAR too many "I am an airline pilot and your not, so you suck" types. For the most part, JCs seasoned folks seem to show a desire to help the wannabes and lower ranks rather than flame and stereotype them.

So we should make it less free market rather than more???? Someone's an alcoholic... do you offer them more booze?? Re-regulation is not the answer. It's like the government, which was the instigator of the root cause of the mortgage mess (telling banks they would be held legally responsible if they did not stop "red lining"), now telling us they will solve the problem with new regulations. Or politicians telling us how evil the executives are for flying corporate jets, then using a 747 to take their wife out on the town. Or politicians telling us we need to cut down on our carbon footprint, then winging off to Europe in a private jet where they eat caviar and are driven around in a limo at a conference where they discuss our evil, materialistic ways. :soapbox:

I was in charge of the budget for a year at Cairns AAF. I made the mistake of being prudent with the budget and ensuring we had money for each quarter. The guy at Lowe AAF spent all his money in the first 1/2 of the year. So the post took away most of our money and gave it to Lowe. I got a butt chewing for saving our money so it could be taken away and the guy at Lowe got cudos for spending their money and our. That in a nutshell is how the government works.
For the uninitiated this is how a government budget works.
You are given money for the year. Sometimes all at once, sometimes throughout the year. If during the course of the year your government entity runs short of money they go around to the sections who have not spent the money and take some or all away. After all, since you have not spent it, you don't need it. So you can see there that budgeting your money is not encouraged.
At the end of the year any money not spent is taken away. Then the budget for the following year is based upon how much money you spent. So if you saved money during the previous year you are penalized by being given less money the following year. SOOOO... in September everyone runs out and spends all their money, even if they don't need anything. It's the biggest waste you have ever seen and is one of the major reasons our budgets are getting out of control.
 
I feel like starting a war so here we go. With all the military aviators saying how they do things that civilian pilots cant. I would argue that civilian pilots like Sean Tucker do things that military pilots could only dream of. If you think a military pilot could jump in his plane and do what he does your out your stinkin mind. You couldnt even be trained to do that. It simply comes down to your either born to do it or not. Its like pro sports. Some can some cant. Doesnt matter if they played at public schools or private catholic schools. You can't teach greatness.,

All right, I'll elaborate. What I hear being said throughout this thread is that:

1. Military pilots have to go through fairly rigorous screening that removes many of the less skillful, lower aptitude individuals.
2. Military training is of a higher quality than civilian.
3. The result is that military pilots are, on average, better overall pilots than their civilian trained counterparts.
