Ankeny, December 2nd, 2005 - Cold weather and a careful plan helped control a major fire at the Ankeny Airport late last night, and prevent a major disaster. Around 10:00 last night the fire department got a call that a jet fuel tanker truck was on fire at the airport.
When crews arrived they found the cab on fire, and attached to the cab was a tanker full of 5,000 gallons of fuel. They immediately sprayed cold water on the tanker to make sure they could keep it cool while dealing with the cab fire. It took about an hour, but the crews were able to get the fire out and not let it spread to the tank.
Ankeny's fire chief, David Burns says "In this case, we made some good risk management decisions, got up there ... put the protectant lines in place before we got closer to the tank we needed to."
W e talked with Chief Burns just after midnight last night and he said fire crews used water and a dry chemical, typically what you find in your household fire extinguisher. to put the fire out. No one was hurt fighting the fire.
There's video if you follow the link. My former employer is having a hell of an unlucky streak (http://forums.jetcareers.com/showthread.php?t=21886). One day while subbing for the regular daytime line guy I checked the engine oil level in the fuel trucks out of boredom. The oil level in the truck that is now destroyed was so low that it didn't even register on the dipstick! Since I'm not one to get anyone in trouble with the boss I just added some and kept my mouth shut. It's a blessing that I don't work there anymore.
