The Dreaded "S"

Re: The Dreaded \"S\"

It'd be great to have a national dialog about this stuff but the 'powers that be' seemed to have overlooked that idea.

I'm sorry it happened to ya, wish the government and TSA would do a better job at explaining their rationale, but the only guy with the TSA that showed up to the website couldn't really handle the heat here.

Re: The Dreaded \"S\"

L10, the system is flawed, with all the money the US has to spend on defense, they have done little to improve the way we get screened at the airport. You can make your change by Voting on tuesday. Until then, Keep the line moving.

Re: The Dreaded \"S\"

It is amazing - when Doug raises points about the TSA, or a TSA joke is made, everyone is on the band wagon. One guy got nailed by the TSA, complains, makes some points, and you guys are all on his case.

Re: The Dreaded \"S\"

I think people are on his case because he is blaming WN for something they had NOTHING to do with.

I fly all the airlines, a lot. Sure, I don't get searched on NWA where I have a couple hundred thousand miles, but I do get searched on one ways on any other airline, and I do a LOT Of one way traveling to get in position for our flights.

He is trying to find a reason to be mad at WN because they are waxing his favorite airline, US, and he's about to lose all his FF miles. That's what it sounds like to me.

Not WN fault that TSA selected you.
Not WN fault that US management are idiots.
Not WN fault that they provide a better service for the price.

People whine about WN, but hard to beat them when you want to go someplace cheap. They are reliable and affordable and consistant. Of course they're doing well. Don't blame WN, blame the management of their competition.

The truth is that it's not so much that WN is winning the battle, but that the other carriers are losing it.

Re: The Dreaded \"S\"

Seagull - I see your point. But when someone is an experienced traveler, and they fly a different airline and things are not as per usual it is understandable where to point the blame.

I doubt the US Airways thing is a huge of a deal as you make it (unless I have missed some previous posts), if he had tons of spare airmiles he would have used them for that trip!

We rate airlines on the overal experience - if the food is bad we blame the airline not the catering company - don't we?

Re: The Dreaded \"S\"

Thank you Iain.

WN printed the SSSS on my ticket from their kiosk. That's about the only evidence I have regarding who's behind this process. In fairness to WN, their FA's were very polite and I got extra peanuts and soda without even asking. I was hoping to hear some of their fun remarks over the PA but I didn't. I have mixed emotions about the ABC boarding process. I would't complain if I draw an A every time, but would if I got a C.

If the weather was bad, would you also blame the airline? The actual fact is, that for all your travelling experience, you really had only experienced one airline on a one-way ticket, until now. Because my company has to deadhead us on commercial carriers to get us in position (and we are on real tickets, not non-rev), I have experienced one-way on all the U.S. carriers and most of the large International carriers. And, I see those "ssss" very often!

As to the boarding process, doesn't it still depend on how early you are as to how early you get to board?

Yes, the ABC boarding process is still determined by when you check in. If you check in online 24 hours before the flight you are pretty much guaranteed an A.

Re: The Dreaded \"S\"

I thought the ABC was based on when you got to the gate? at least that's been my experience....

drawing an A or a C depends on how early you get to the gate.. if you get to the gate an hour + for the flight, you pretty much guarantee yourself an A (depending on how many others have already gotten to the gate to grab a boarding pass).. if you draw a C, it's your own fault for not trying to beat everyone to the punch and not something worthy of complaining about.

I tend to get screened quite a bit when I'm flying standby on SWA esp on one way trips. I expect it now a days to have to go thru that....

You don't have to go to the gate to get the letter assignment. I checked in last week online and printed my boarding card with that big A on it. What do the S's look like? Are they stamped on by the personel, or do they get printed on the boarding card?

Gee, why couldn't the TSA recognize me in their database as a frequent-flyer regardless of what airline I'm on? I'm not sure who is more at fault here; WN for punishing me for buying a one-way ticket or the TSA for not recognizing frequent flyers.

[/ QUOTE ]

You are aware that Mohamad Atta was a frequent flyer as well, right?

Just because you fly a lot doesn't mean you're not a security risk. Atta flew a lot. But we all know what a security risk he was.

Stuff happens. Deal with it and move along. Or elect a President who will dump the current system, which doesn't do jack. It doesn't matter whether or not the guys are private or public sector employees. This system is not effective.

It's for show. It makes Aunt Bessie feel safer but it doesn't mean jack.
