The Dark Side

How many of you consider 91/135 "The Dark Side" of aviation. What I mean is, are 135/91 guys/gals wreckless(as opposed to 121), or more dangerous? Be serious to please.

I saw this and immediately thought, "I tried to go there a few times, but usually the say they're not into that sort of thing or it doesn't feel good."

:D

(As a general rule, I've seen cowboys in any side of things. It's the individual. Culture may influence it, but you never really know until you really know.)

What prompts this? You cant just throw in "be serious," and not expect a flame war to ensue.

I can only speak from the 121 and 135 side of things.

From a purely regulatory standpoint, both operations are safe.

From an operational standpoint, in both cases, it depends on the type of people running the show, ie DO's CP's, etc.

I won't get on a Pinnacle flight, while I would get on some 135 operators. I wouldn't get on some 135 operators, while I will get on a Mesaba flight.

Clear as a mud?

What's with the sudden need for self validation of 135/91?

I've seen some REALLY cowboy 121 operations. I've also seen some 135 ops that probably should have had their certificate yanked years ago. I've seen a part 91 flight department run an airplane into a tree because of the ops mentality over there.

I've also seen some incredibly efficient and safe 121, 135 and 91 ops.

I've never worked for a 121 operator, so I don't know what to say about that.

I've worked for a 135 charter company, and we were expected to be safe. The CP told us on several occasions to NEVER push it in bad wx, and would even call us if the wx was going down to make sure we didn't feel obligated to complete the trip. We were NEVER forced to lie about duty times, but did come up against them a couple of times (and had to cancel a couple of trips as a result).

At my current 91 operator, we are put up in nice hotels, expected to eat nice, nutritious meals, and generally have lots and lots of rest. We are never questioned when it comes to wx and performance. If something breaks, it is fixed immediately with no questions asked.

So I really don't see what is supposed to be cowboy about these types of ops... Like others have said, it generally comes down to the individual or company culture.

Every facet of aviation is going to have individuals or groups that will cover every imaginable type of operation from super safe to down right dangerous.

To sterotype ANY sector of the industry is absurd.

I voted no, and after I saw the poll I was happy to see that everyone so far voted that way. I work for a 121 and have done 91 charter stuff in the past. Think that 135/91 stuff can be just as safe, if not safer in some situations. I am thinking of a scenarion where a rich guy who owns a jet and wants everything to be perfect. I'm sure there are others too, but 121's (as seen in the recent past) also cut corners to save money.

I might still be wreckless, but i did fall in the water today.

Nice... down here when you upgrade to Captain on floats they throw you off the dock. Its random, so you could lose a cell phone etc., and you get to fly all day soaked to the bone! :) Moral of the story, once you upgrade, be ready for anything... or grow a third eye in the back of your head!

Nice, wheres "down here?" I wish someone would have pushed me in, it would have been less embarrassing. I was just trying to push off, the prop turned and i turned with it. And yeah, i got to make the rest of the stops soaked, at least i got to go home when i got back to the base. :)

I'm not sure the question can be taken seriously, dude. So, yes, I'm nuttier than Chinese chicken salad but thusfar wreckless. Just a matter of time, I suppose!

Delia and I are working on a book called "Hanger Nights" - unfortunately, we can't publish it until we're both retired.
