The cool pilot?

I love what I do. It is far from perfect, but it beats having a "real" job. I'm not where I want to be yet, but I'm making moves to get there and hopefully it pays off. Maybe @Autothrust Blue and some others from this site, as well as myself, can be that fresh blood annoying and scaring @Derg from the right seat one of these days.

Ultimately, at the end of the day I'd rather be crawling into my own bed next to my wife after a full day of surfing and greasy Mexican food with @dasleben and friends. However, if I have to bring home some bacon, I'm happy with the manner in which I do so.

So I went with what I know best, aviation. All of a sudden, I was the hot blonde with a short skirt that everyone was staring at. I had captains and lieutenants standing at attention. At intermission I literally had 8 guys standing around asking me aviation related questions.

The only answer...flying is still cool! :)
Wait, ARE you a hot blonde in a short skirt that everyone stares at???

I think it doesn't matter if the public thinks it's still cool (career development aside).
Flying is like herpes, once ya got it, you're keeping it. Might as well find the best ointment, then try to convince a women it ain't so bad so she'll marry you.
Ahh yeah, I remember the good old days when herpes was cool...

Low expectations are the key to a happy life. I fully expect things to be crappy most of the time. When they aren't, I'm pleasantly surprised.

For you youngsters it's an old MadTv skit.

I can honestly say that I've never worked at any other job, in any other industry where I logged into a forum in my off time to learn more about my industry. I'd say that in itself proves that everyone here finds a little cool factor in their flying job.

Since starting an aviation career 14 years ago, I have left the operational side for a couple of short stints to fly a desk in a cubicle. Most depressing experiences of my life! Every time I get bummed about my current situation, I just look back at those days. I was paid better at the time, but it wasn't worth it in the long run.

Being a pilot is way cooler than my job especially given that this is what people think I do...

I did that too. When you were working with the right people in the right weather with nice long turns, it was like hanging out and playing with airplanes. And getting into unspeakable shenanigans that will make you laugh for years to come. I'd say you have a cool job.

I have a coworker, controller, that has over 70 scale models. When he orders them he tries to figure out which airline/box hauler it will ride on. To ensure it rides on its carrier and type if possible.

Some people go to great links for things others would call crazy.
That's pretty neat

I find that I love flying... But it is not fulfilling... I have always been one to design and build stuff... Without that I go stir crazy. Recently, I was promoted (or punished lol) by being asked to be Director of Safety, first at my last company, now with my current... I find it a healthy balance for me. I am creating/improving a safety management system, then I get to go flying with some great people...

We describe our trips differently though. "Hey, let's take the King Air to VT for lunch. Oh and we are going to bring a family back with us afterwards." All of a sudden, this isn't work.

I used to work in a lab playing Frankenstein with bacteria. That was pretty cool, too, albeit kind of gross when you come to the realization that you can ID %90 of all bacteria by smell alone.

There's lots of cool things in the world. You just don't realize it.

The time off to do things I want to do, visit the places I want to visit sure makes it worth it.
Where else do you get white collar salaries for blue collar type work for about 5 to 6 months of collective work a year?

I eventually want to get into some consulting work, so the jump-seat privileges and time-off will make it workout great.

I get irritated at the goings on lately, but this is still cool. I don't know anyone that thinks otherwise.
