That's because it basically is. MD-90 fuselage (built from the MD-90 tooling sold to them), with a new Russian designed wing.

Maybe it's the white on red that's playing an illusion with my eyes. I'm used to seeing a white and blue color scheme.

The Chinese are great at copying things. They still build a version of the Mig17 and the Mig21 I belive. They were also in hot water with GM for making a carbon copy of a Chevy a few years back. It totally looks like a short re-engined DC9.

Didn't MD sell the licence and tooling for China to produce a Chinese version of the DC-9? They just substituted an underpowered engine instead of going for a larger Pratt or RR.

See post 3. But yes, McDonell Douglas did sell the MD-90 tooling to China, so that they could build some. They ended up building 3 of them, not sure if Delta will end up with them or not. We shall see, I would imagine
