The Age-Old Rollaboard Question

Folks,

Decided it's time for a new rollaboard. I am not looking outside of luggageworks brand so please don't try to sell me on anything else lol. My current one was my dad's and is finally dying after something like 20 years and a rebuild. I would get another rebuild but there's a good chance I'll end up on the 737 again in the future and that airplane really tore up the side pockets on mine, so I'd like to get the one without side pockets. The big question I have is whether anyone has tried the newer "stealth" models that are still metal but weigh less. If so, how are they holding up after a few years compared to the "executive" ones? Again, mine has been "in service" for 20 years with 1 rebuild so I'm really impressed. As a commuter, lighter would be better but I'd rather go with an executive if people have had issues with long-term integrity. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Dan

I don't think you'll be disappointed. This is the version they released last year with lighter frame components. Going on over a year and not one single problem, far less paint missing from the framing as well - so, they're doing something better. Same weight as the plastic frame Executive and four pounds lighter than the classic Aviator. Granted, one point of clarification, I bought the bag with extra side pockets...which you stated you didn't need so I linked the appropriate bag to you. It has one subtle pocket on one side towards the top for keys, change, and anything thats probably less than 4-5inch long.

I don't think you'll be disappointed...one bit.

Oh, did I say that already?

Buy now. THE END.

Thanks for the input! The upper left side pocket wont cause an issue in the 737, it was the lower left one that was catching. Looks pretty good, the zipper-pullers (is there a word for that?) look different than my older one, are they holding up too?

Yup, they're holding up just fine after a little more than a year as well.

Honestly, not one single problem with the bag so far.

I have the lightweight bag without the side pockets. I've only been using it for just shy of six months now as a commuter and it still looks more or less new, and I have had it in the cockpit as well while jumpseating on the 737...no heartburn!!

That bag is full of win. The End. Discussion over. Best bag LW has produced. Every one of their older ones are over rated.

Anyone use the executive plastic frame bag? Looks solid too and much lighter I think... thought about picking one up

Costco 4x2?

4x2?
Online at Costco, all I see is the Kirkland spinner bag. Are these things prohibitive in anyway for the discerning aviator? Seems like more crap sticking up in the bagge compartment making me need a third arm to load the golf clubs.
I know you haven't seen the inside of a baggage compartment in quite a while, but opinions are welcome from all. ;)

I have the Kirkland spinner bag. The biggest problem is that it rolls very easily right off the ramp onto active taxiways. I've been thinking about glueing the rear wheels so it doesn't roll away when vertical.

I looked at the Stealth Air when I was bag shopping last year. I wanted to get it, but being a commuter decided I didn't want to ding up a nice $300 bag. I decided that when we move to base, I'll buy it. It had also just come out and I talked to some LW customer service people who said that durability wasn't known because it had only been out a couple months.

In the mean time I went with the TravelPro Flight Crew / Pilot 4 for $150. So far it's been fairly good to me. I commute and check it almost every flight, so it hasn't been babied. I did look at the Costco $99 bag (not the 4 wheeler, the 21.5" two wheeler, I believe it could only be bought online) and while it seemed OK the biggest issue was lack of pockets on the outside. Looks like they've completely discontinued it now.
