TERPS vs. PANS-OPS

ZapBrannigan

If it ain’t a Boeing, I’m not going. No choice.
Does anyone have a book or document that summarizes operational differences between TERPS and PANS-OPS?

I have a book called "From Takeoff to Landing" by Olle Akerlind, but it is no longer in print and I need something that I can obtain a number of copies of.

Thanks in advance.

Getting to Grips With Aircraft Performance (it's up on SmartCockpit) talks about the differences between TERPS (well, FAA) and PANS-OPS (re: JAR) certification requirements. It doesn't cover everything, but it might be a good place to start. Be warned, it is very Airbus Centric.

I'll do some digging. Are you solely looking to cover PANS-OPS, or would you also be interested in hitting on FIR boundaries, transition levels/altitudes, etc.?

No just a quick reference on TERPS / PANS-OPS differences. There are only 6 TERPS countries worldwide so you would think there is something...

We have very good information in the "NavData" book of our Jepp set. Differences all based on what we have, using US standards on baseline, and of course, all the PanOps stuff from the 90% wind cones and stuff.

Not sure if you have access to that or not. If your operation does international Ops, perhaps it's in the front matter of your Jepp info for that fleet.

Yes, we do. I am looking for something a little more "Cliff's Notes" to use as a job-aid for crews heading to a Pans-Ops country.

The ATC and EnRoute parts have that, by country.

They cover all non-standard things, diverts and the like. Super handy and a quick read.

LIDO takes the opposite approach. It is all based on PANS-OPS ICAO standard, with the differences pages for each region, country, airport in sections pertinent to those places. It greatly simplifies this.

Roughly how many hours is your PANS-OPS module in your pilot training program? I really wish I had more before heading over the pond. Lots of OJT, but I'm curious how your operator trains.

We have both computer based training and a ground school course, which was a couple of days when I went through. It is also incorporated into the LOFTs and recurrent training. The operation is structured around International ops, so even U.S. flying is based on differences from the ICAO standard rather than U.S. being viewed as the 'norm", when, as previously pointed out, it clearly is NOT!
