I take and go through it with my laptop open and make notes and reference them to pages. Just read the whole thing, cover to cover. Do it with every AFM. "Know thy ship!"

Naw, I was being funny there. Yeah, from what I know, the only J models that will be utilizing Navs (CSOs, I guess) will be the MC-130Js and maybe the WC-130Js do down at Keesler.

Most all of active duty is Js now from what I've seen. From slicks to the refuelers. Some holdouts are the EC-130 jammers, which are still H models. AFRES and many ANG units are still H models of varying types.

No J-model uses an FE that I know of, and none of the slick ones uses a Nav. But @NewYorkophile would have the skinny on all of this far better than me.

My joke comes from something I witnessed, that being AF you'd fully understand. So I'm at DM base ops a couple months ago getting a WX flimsy and dropping off a 175. That day, there was an E-6 recruiter there with about 5 of those delayed-entry enlistees, and they were touring the base ops, as well as some other places. One of the recruitees, all of them high school age, asks if there's jobs available in the airfield management field, as that looks interesting. Convo goes something like this:

Enlistee: Sergeant, are there jobs here at base ops, is it something we'd be eligible for? It looks interesting..

Recruiter: Well, that depends on your ASVAB score and whether there are openings. But more importantly, can someone here remind the group what the 2nd core value of the Air Force is?

One of the enlistees: "Service before Self", Sergeant!!

Recruiter: Exactly. Service before Self. Which is why even though you may be interested in this or any job, I have ALWAYS said that you must exercise service before self. Needs of the service you signed up for and swore into, above your own personal needs. Right? Going to basic training Open-General is the ultimate in Service before Self, as instead of doing what you personally want, you will go where YOUR United States Air Force needs you and where you're qualified. And believe me, the Air Force will match you up with a job that is best for you, as the Air Force knows where your best fit in. So take in the different jobs that the Air Force has to offer, so you know what the Air Force does, but know that anyone can do anything in the Air Force, pending they qualify, and that EVERY job is equally important and one to take the utmost pride in. Open-General ladies and gentlemen....service before self.



I wanted to barf........what a flipping con job if I've ever heard one! You know as well as I do, that they're going VFR-direct to Security Police or Services!

From what I know of the Keesler guys (only because they're AF Reserve also, just a different Numbered Air Force than I'm in), they do some darn good work. Very interesting niche flying, much like the NY ANG at Schnectady who does the arctic ski-bird LC-130s.
