How about the pavement coming off Atlantic at KLAS? Or KBIS? Or KABQ? There’s plenty of places where the ramp and a taxiway share the same piece of pavement and are only differentiated by the line.

I'm just saying if you're going to tell someone that's never worked at an airport what a nonmovement and movement area is, saying a movement area is on one side of a line and the nonmovement area is on the other, is not going to help that person understand the difference at all.

Do you have an example of an airport that has a ramp designated as a movement area?
FAR 139.5 has a movement area definition:

No, I've walked onto the ramp at Santa Monica without a clearance from SMO Ground.

Yes, lotsa ambiguity here. It sounds like he wants you to stay off Alpha on your way back to the ramp, and that’s all he cares about. He may not realize that you cleared Alpha and he wants you to hurry and clear Alpha, that’s what he might be frustrated about. I wouldn’t guess in a case like this.

When I get an ambiguous clearance like this, I try to avoid asking for repeat of the same ambiguous clearance that might elevate everybody’s frustration. I’d probably reply, I’m Lima short of Bravo, requesting Lima all the way to the ramp.
