Looking to Ride-Along
This has been bugging me for a little while....I personally have none, but was wondering if havingtattoos that are in a place covered by normal work clothes would be a bad idea if the eventual goal is getting to the airlines.

What's everyone's opinion?

A tattoo in a place covered by normal work clothes? Like on your back? Thighs? Butt? Those places are normally covered by my work clothes. If that's the case you don't have anything to worry about. A tattoo on your neck or face will surly hinder you from employment at many reputable companies (and I'm not just talking aviation).

I know pilots though who have tattoos on their forearms and hold a flying job just fine. Most of the time they just have to wear long sleeve shirts.
 
If they are asking you to remove clothing during your interview, you uhhhh, might have other problems.

On the other hand, I think that a full-color brand logo of your favorite major airline across your forehead has just gotta scream loyalty and initiative. Though it might be a problem if you have to build some time at another airline prior to making it to your major of choice :)
 
If you've got massive tats all over, it's probably not going to be the "image" a 121 carrier is looking for.

However, tattoos you can't see while wearing a [short sleeved] uniform, you can't see. Even for a F/A, the stipulation was "no tattoos visible while wearing the standard-issue uniform".
 
I have several Tattoos on my legs. I love tattoos and will be getting more. But they are all coverable for the reason of being a pilot. But I would avoid arm (unless you like long sleeves) neck, hand, or face tattoos. To a potential employer it might be ok, it might not. But why take the chance on something you can control.

The only thing about Tattoos is the FAA wants to know about them on your next medical.
 
I have a tattoo that extends vertically down my triceps from my shoulder to about an inch above my elbow. I was young and stupid when I decided to get ink done in that location. Now all I can think about is the day I decide to move down to a location such as Arizona and will have to wear long sleeves during the summer, while already baking in a plane. I would advise against any tattoos that a short sleeve shirt will not cover.
 
There is nothing wrong with it. I've got a few but none that a regular short sleeve t-shirt wouldn't cover up. I would avoid getting a tattoo sleeve but if you really wanted to it would not hinder your career at all. You would just be stuck wearing long sleeve pilot shirts. I wore these at first because I thought they looked more professional but that didn't last long. Now I hate them since they are unconfortable, get in the way sometimes and the elbows get dirty. I once saw a Southwest pilot walking through the terminal in a regular short sleeve pilot shirt sporting a full sleeve tattoo but is better to keep them out of sight.

Or a tattoo of a wolf on your chest you could wear under your wolf t-shirts....

Also, one single teardrop tattoo for my homies isn't acceptable?
 
If you ever want to work in China and have a tattoo you will be rejected. I even think the tattoo removal scar will deny you your medical. If you want to work stateside I don't see anything wrong with a long sleeve shirt to cover up. I think tattoos are a waste of money and will look like crap when you're older.

"Covered and not visible" is the rule at both the Soviet Fleet and the U-Boat Fleet.
 
My buddy has a tattoo on his left forearm, and flies for Compass. I'm assuming he wears a long sleeve shirt everday, summertime included. In the cockpit however... roooollin' up the sleeves.
 
If you "think" you want to get one, I wouldn't suggest it.

If you have this undeniable urge to permanently mark yourself, well, your decision is already made.

I have a few that are covered by short sleeve shirts. Here is another thing to think about though. In charter we spend a lot of time in hotels together swimming etc. don't get anything that you wouldn't want a co worker to see when on a 3 day wait in a warm place that you will end up swimming at

No, I've been wanting one pretty badly for a few years now..... A little background, my mom can be pretty uptight but is a CA for AA and has said literally since birth that if I got a tattoo anywhere "good luck getting hired at an airline". The more I get older, the more I see that's probably just her wanting to protect her son from stupidity haha. I'm looking at getting one that's like 2.5"H X 4"L just above the knee

In all honesty, i'm looking at doing this:

JUST KIDDING for obvious reasons.
 
Well, for many airlines your mother is correct.

Now if its underneath your clothes and unseen in a pilots "summer" uniform, you're ok.

If you really want to get back at your mom, affix an Obama or Romney sticker on the back of your car! :)
