i have a small question. how would one use the vor to talk to the FSS or "atlanta" radio? i know the jist of it and have used it a few time, but the first time i try it never words. i need to change a few things to make it work... so in a nutshell, can you help?

This is better shown with a sectional and radio in front of you, but here goes...

Use the VHF frequency listed to transmit on (122.1R) and listen on the VOR frequency given (115.40) by selecting the frequency in your NAV box and turning up the volume. But do not push the button for the ident function, b/c it will make it harder to hear the FSS person.

You would say, "Atlanta Radio, SkyHawk 52243 tranismitting on 122.1 and receiving 115.40" That should get you going!

/end nutshell :)

That's pretty old school but I supose you can still do it in some places. You don't "talk" using the VOR. You talk on 122.1 and listen on the VOR freq where you normally hear the VOR ident. If your nav reciever has a VOR ident/voice switch, it should be in voice. Also, you'll need to make sure your audio panel (if you have one) has the nav receiver button pushed in.

Only twice in my life have I been able to listen to flight service over a VOR frequency. It usually doesn't work. If you get one with a two-way voice frequency, that works a lot better.

I ferried a 152 from CA to VA about 2 years ago. I had the old Collins radios and never got much higher than 4000 AGL and was able to hear the FSS numerous times over the VOR without any trouble.

I listen to FSS over the NAV quite frequently with no trouble at all on many different aircraft. However, it is easier to just have one freq.

One more thing; you need not tell them what frequency you are transmitting on--they don't care how you got to them, they just need to know how to get back to you so my transmissions go like "White House lawn radio, bugsmasher 828CT listening on 122.1"
