They just awarded a massive bid for the next few months at once. The most junior RJ captain went to ORD and was hired 03-01-2004

thats awesome. good for them. what about you? How long are upgrades in the 120? are you going to try to move over to the jet after your seat lock? or stay and try to upgrade in the bro?

I tried to get on with Skyw, i faxed, emailed, and Fedex'd my resume to camielle as well as having it walked in. Really bummed that i havent heard. Its a great company and I would have loved to worked there. You're a lucky guy.

Woah! Thats quicker than I would have expected. Hmmm I hope for us that trend continues for the forseeable future. I could use a good pay raise.

With ayear upgrade, I wouldnt care how long I was on reserve as long as was less then a couple of years...Thats a mighty nice upgrade time into a CRJ.

That's nice and all, and I sure wouldn't pass it up, but...

With 9 months on the jet at ExpressJet, I really believe now that another year or two in the right seat would really do me good before upgrade. Every trip I fly I'm learning so much more with every leg, and there is so much more that I think I could learn in another year or two.

For those (like me) who aren't facing upgrade soon, don't fret. This time in the right seat (or in another job) is definitely a good thing.

I couldn't imagine going from being an MEI with 1500 hours to jet captain in a year. That is a tough transition! Especially when you'll be flying on reserve with new reserve FOs coming straight out of training and all.

Well said, but still would be great to be able to upgrade in a year.

ExpressJet is ATP Mins...If you can get the ATP, you can be captain. Pre-9/11, guys we're just a couple of months in the right seat before upgrading to Beech captain. Some were holding Beech captain in training (so they say).

Good point, but no one forces anybody to upgrade if you don't feel comfortable... Especially with SkyWest's up or out policy!
You'll simply loose the job if you are not up to speed.

As much as I see the guys who are taking early upgrades came from other airlines, have flown in the military or have some serious freight times.
I have not seen any 1500 hour MEI's yet (well, actually you need 1000 turbine to upgrade at SKW) - they sit FO on the jets for a few years.

Besides who is to say that once you get in the left seat you'll stop learning!? Never ending process.

A lot of guys jumped ship and came over to SKYW from Expressjet, AWAC, and mesa. Most have lots of previous turbine and 121 time. The average new hire at SKYW has about 2500TT and 1000ME with roughly half turbine time.

As far as myself, I know that I'm not nearly ready for that type of position. I plan on enjoying 16+ days off per month. Off weekends, holidays, etc. I will probably go to the jet right seat in Feb 06 after we have another few hundred pilots on property and I'm in the top 30th percentile of FO's.

I think it's a much nicer option to have knowing you can upgrade after one year rather than sit idle on reserve for six months and fly only a few horus per month.

8Leg- good point-definetely- you never stop learning. I think you probably learn more as a captain than you do as an FO.

When you were going thru your ratings and learning, you thought you knew most of what there was to know about the basics of flying. Then you got your CFI and were in charge of teaching and realized you didn't know sqwuat. All the real learning came from becoming that CFI/PIC and learning when students would most commonly make mistakes and what to expect.

FlyC,
That is a very honest point of view and I applaud you. And may I point out that you had quite a bit of 121 time (Saab, right?) before going to ExpressJet.

These are some very good responses from you guys that are "walking the (121) walk."

That is super short, my mate Darrin who joined in 01, just upgraded on the RJ.

Talking about flying with new FOs a friend of mine at BA upgraded on the 757 and in his first week on the line, he had a guy who went through the BA sponsored training sit right seat. I think the guy had about 600 hours and 100 and something in type. Can you imagine in your first week of being a captain flying with someone who has not yet mastered the FO role. Luckily my friend had been on the 757 for the previous 10 years, so they were in very good hands!

Excellent points. After being at Air Midwest for a year, I could have gone Beech Captain, ERJ Captain, or CRJ FO. I chose to go CRJ FO for the same reasons: I was qualified per the FARs, but not per my comfort level. Heck, even after sitting in the right seat of the CRJ for 3+ years, that was still a daunting move to the left.

Be cautious of upgrading too quick. That's how we bent an airplane in ROA a few years back.

PS...We had guys upgrading in INDOC at one point a few years ago. The avg upgrade time was 6-8 months. Now it's back to 3+ years.

How do the "street captains" at Mesa usually fare? In the sense of, are they usually behind, rely on the FO alot, etc?

Ya know, I never flew with one when I was a Beech FO. From what I've heard, though, it's quite a huge jump for them. Much more responsibility than they ever thought.

a funny than heck comment I heard the other day about EMB FO's upgrading to CRJ CA's is that they sit in the corner of their room facing the wall and rocking back and forth in the fetal position!

Hahahahha!
