T-Mobile, and International flying...

I just swapped before my last trip. I took my unlocked iPhone 5 over to T-Mobile, and am paying $25/mo less now. Data works great in Taiwan, S. Korea, and Japan. Should have swapped sooner.

Your practical experience is just as educational for me though, please don't take my responses the wrong way. I've never used my phone out of the country, so my knowledge is strictly what I've read in policy/memos and been taught in trainings. I certainly appreciate the real-world feedback!

It was certainly meant in the best way possible. You sound like you either engineer this stuff, or have some other in depth working knowledge.

As of now, you are much better than the expensive AT&T world data the company gives us. It's worked great in places one would expect; Europe (which tend to be T-Mobile networks), Japan & South Korea but also unexpected places like Chile, Brazil, Kenya and Nigeria.

My only beef is Alaska. 10mb of data/mo. Used up before I can switch it off.

Yeah the domestic data roaming cap is really a big gripe for a lot of propel, myself included. I wish we played nicer with our domestic competition when it came to roaming.

@Pichettet1 is there anyway as a Verizon person to take advantage of the T-Mo international goodies with a prepaid sim?
Unfortunately, the Simple Global roaming is only for Postpaid rate plans.

For those that are considering switching, there is an ETF reimbursement offer (up to $350 per line, maximum 5 per account) if you meet the requirements:
1. Port in your number from Verizon, Sprint, or AT&T
2. Trade in a device (one per line, and you get a trade-in credit up to $300)
3. Purchase a new phone through T-Mobile (either pay full price or through the installment plan)

@Stone Cold thank you so much for the suggestion, when I saw your thread I canceled my sprint plan and switched to T Mobile. Just got down to Mexico and it's working great, fast data and texting back home. Works better than expected even in tiny ass San Luis Potosi, MX. Thanks!

Glad I could help. I feel like a walking T Mobile commercial, but I think it's worth it in this case. Enjoy Mexico!

Is there a link to their global coverage? I might have missed it. Wondering specifically about the Caribbean and S. America.

I found this but it has no maps that I can see:

Now that I'm going to different places this might make sense to have. Hmm. Is this a limited time offer or is there plans to keep it going for a while?

As far as I know, it's just inclusive in the plan. They also bumped up the 4g to 1gb for the basic plan from 500 mb

It looks like I can buy an older phone off eBay and activate it for a month and try out their service. I might do that in the future.

The Simple Global stuff is here to stay. As far as foreign coverage maps go, none exist that I know of, just the list of countries included. Since it's not technically T-Mobile coverage it would be hard to create a map with coverage areas for all the international carriers.

Yep! All you need is a T-Mobile phone or an unlocked phone that takes a SIM card. No contracts so you could use it for a month and cancel if it doesn't work out for you. The only cost would be the SIM and the service.

If T-Mo had some better US coverage, I'd be all over this. Verizon is expensive, but I can't go pack to spotty service just by judging the T-Mo coverage maps. Hopefully their network keeps on growing here stateside. At least maybe give Verizon a run for their money.

I am EXTREMELY pleased with T-mob. I will admit their coverage is not as good as the bigger companies. Plan on one bar less than your ATT and Verizon buddies in the city, and also plan on dropping off 4G to 2G much quicker than them when you're on a highway out of town. That said, the overseas benefits are AWESOME. I've used data in Spain, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, Turkey, Panama, and Japan. They say it's metered to 2G speeds, but I've had some fast data overseas.

Wifi calling is also great. I did not know it was a proprietary Tmobile feature until recently, but it's awesome. Hook up to a decent wifi signal anywhere in the world, and you're making calls for free from your own number to your own phone book. I've made calls from Iraq, Asscrackistan and Qatar with zero issues and zero cost.

Glad to hear that. While it isn't something anyone is going to use every day, it is awesome to have and saves me a few hundred bucks/year, and greatly improves my life when overseas.

That's why I went to a Verizon MVNO. $43.25/month each for 2 smart phones unlimited talk, text, and 2.5 gb of data each on the Verizon native network. Really an excellent deal. Hopefully T-Mobile can up their game and start sprouting towers left and right, they need a lot more to compete.

Where are you flying that has spotty coverage? I fly all over the Easter half of the US and never have any issues with signal.
