SWA CEO Defines Irony (gleaned from necroposted thread)

Bigey you missed the, "Then came 1991" part, which was an implication that in 1991, they furloughed, after Delta had never furloughed in 60 years, which is twice as long as SWA has been around.

Get it?

Mo' betta.

I'm just saying that one should be exceptionally careful with using words like "never" in the airline business. There are none, and will never be absolutes in this business.

No you're not, you're posting on JC :)

And since you are, I'll just ask; ever remove the rear seat in your Grand Am? I'm ripping my car apart right now and puttin' in a system so I can be fly...and stuff...

Ahh gotcha.

I used the word never as in terms they NEVER have in that time period. Not that there isnt a possibility in the upcoming.

Hence, the "...carefully read..." portion of my statement.

SWA = Walmart = da man = crap. Sorry SWA and Walmart fans.

A cheapened product doesn't necessarily make it better. Sure, they are both financially successful companies but true quality products and service are still important. Personally I believe SWA has cheapened the rest of the industry. Quality service is still important to lots of folks out there. Boarding an airplane like a bunch of cattle and listening to the same old cheap jokes doesn't work for the entire flying public.

Solution? Perhaps a little thing known as 'perceived value'. Offer and actually deliver a superior product/service and thou shall recieve proper payment. The public still has to fly. My friend's parents paid $600 each for a roundtrip to Hawaii in the 70's. Today they can get that same flight for less than $350. What the •??!?! Perceived value my friends.

Or we could simply re-regulate and set fixed rates on routes again :)

I don't think you can make that analogy. Wal-Mart abuses it's employee's and doesn't pay well. Wal-Mart moves into a town, destoy's local businesses and then pays people crap to work at Wal-Mart after they lost their decent paying jobs at the local company's.

Southwest on the other hand has industry leading pay and work rules AND offers cheap fares on SOME of their flights. Southwest isn't always the cheapest, but they still manage to sell a lot of seats.

Hmm...point taken. However, I do see a similarity still. SWA moves into a market, cheapens routes/increases competition and then other establsihed airlines take a hit and suffer. Similar, no?

How are they like Wal-Mart?

There's no quality on SWA? I've flown on 4 airlines in the last 12 months, and the best service was on SWA. I got more to eat on SWA. I was on time more on SWA. Where's the problem?

Personally I believe SWA has cheapened the rest of the industry.

How?

Ohhh, so we should regulate to make the other guys profitable?
;)

I don't think so, because I've taken legacy carriers over Southwest more than a few times because the legacy's were cheaper.

Southwest won't price below what it costs to operate the flight, ever. They know they'll lose money doing that and they're not too interested in that. People just THINK that Southwest is always the cheapest, where that isn't always true.

They've just got everybody believing the hype :)

Well, that's just silliness!! Each flight may lose money, but if you operate enough of them, maybe - just maybe . . . :):sarcasm:

I'll never fly SWA.

Been there, done that, have the t-shirt to prove it. And while they are a good company, the whole cattle call BS doesn't work for me.

I want to be able to show up when I feel like showing up, knowing seat 8d is mine. And I want to be able to board before everyone else. Legacy carriers, if I fly enough with them, let me do that.

I do not want to show up super early to stand in line to be the first group of cattle to board like I would with SWA.

SWA = Walmart?

Cheap product. Were they not the first company to offer a no frills cheaper service? I agree with John that they are not always the cheapest per ticket, but I'm talking about cheap as in the service. Which in itself isn't bad or wrong. They found their niche and it works for them. Fair enough.

Also I never said SWA had no quality or is the devil. Walmart is the devil. SWA have done a lot of things right...treat your employees well, one type a/c etc.
