Suprise in the cockpit

Was on one of my time building X-countrys yesterday calling up the FSS to file a flight plan from MKT-OMA to head home. Since the 1972 Cherokee I fly lacks air conditioning I always leave the door open right until I start the engine. As I was reading off my flight details to the briefer a nasty blue wasp flies into the plane and starts buzzing around me. I stop talking and start swatting at it. Big mistake, the bastard stung me twice right on the cheek and on the neck. At the point I was just trying to get out of the aircraft and when I finally did and turned around this thing was still flying at me, so I sprint a good 100+ feet into the FBO and being an automatic door lets the wasp in too.... I finally turn around and smack it into the ground stepping on it a bunch finally killing it. I couldn't believe how aggressive this thing was and how much the stings hurt... Luckily the FBO was nice and lended me some bags and ice. As for the cheek, it was a long, painful two hour ride home with my headset. Anyways, just wanted to share this unfortunate experience:crazy:

They don't sting but I had a couple of dragonflys in the Metro cockpit last summer. I believe they came in through the Cargo door when mx. was doing some work on it and took shelter in the cockpit until I took off. Startled me to say the least. Those things are way too big to be flying around a small cockpit.

Sounds like it got you good andrew. Better on the ground than that baby start popping you on takeoff. I actually was in a baron with a friend going into atl and we had to battle a red wasp most of the flight. It took forever to get him because he kept getting back behind the panel. Fortunatly neither of us got stung.

Is flight service still holding? 'Cause that would be appropriately ironic you know.

I was starting my longwacker (Metroliner) and right after I get the right engine started I notice a huge wasp sitting on my SAS indicator. I motion for the MX/Line guy to open my door and come inside. He does and is scared less because of how big it is. So I had to shutdown, get out, and spin the props then kill this ginormous wasp before cheating death once again in the San Antonio Sewer Pipe.

a nasty blue wasp

Did it look like this? Doesn't seem like it would be too bad...

I was on a 3 hr IFR flight to Shreveport with my instructor when a huge bee started buzzing around our heads. My instructor at the time, who claimed she was deadly allergic to bees, was crawled up in the fetal position while I was trying to swat the thing out the windows of our 172. I failed, but luckily the bee finally calmed down and flew to the back seat and just chilled there until we landed at SHV.

I am deathly afraid of bees. Let's just put it out there. No, I'm not allergic and yes, I have been stung (two for one!) and it wasn't bad at all. It's more the thought of getting stung and the look of the nasty buggers as opposed to the actual sting. Same goes with jellyfish, and I live on the ocean.

I have always dreaded this scenario and luckily, it hasn't happen yet. Obviously I would focus on flying the airplane, but it is easier said than done.

Some club member just found a nest in the pitot tube of one of our gliders the other week. Luckily it was on the the ground during the preflight. Nice job to the OP, even if it was on the ground:D

I had a bee once buzzing around the cockpit. There wasn't exactly a "get it out the window" option because it was an aztec. I'm not allergic either, but I hate bees, or being stung for that matter. (Who doesn't) But I didn't swat or cause a fit. Eventually after a half hour of it figuring out it couldn't get out, it flew to the back. So I sat there, 5 hours knowing there was a bee somewhere behind me.. waiting to strike..

I was taxiing to the gate once and was trying to talk to FSS to close my flight plan. Wasps flew in the door, attacked and nearly killed me. That's what you get for talking to FSS while in a plane.

See what operating oversquare gets you? Full of venom and welts.
