Superbugs & colds...

Well, ya, I'm up to date on all that.. the problem is, they don't even have it behind the counter anymore. so i'm looking for an alternative...*shrug* maybe they're coming out with a newer version or something but even my sister in florida can't find it

funny story: i just found out tonight that the sudafed non-drying is also HER saving grace... weird huh?!

I'll check it out! I've never heard of it, is it over the counter?

if not, do you think Mucinex would be any good?

well, about day 11, i figured out the cold was gone.. but i still had persistant "cold" like problems...decided to go to the doc and boom, sinus infection... makes perfect sense...drainage causing nausea, constant headache, cough etc..all attributed to sinus's! been on amoxi for 4 days now (10 day perscription) and it's still taking it's sweet time disappearing....

quick question tho... this coming weekend, we leave for oktoberfest and the objective - obviously to drink some seriously good beer and enjoy gourmet german beer food!! I asked the pharmacist if it was possible to drink some beers while taking the antibiotic and he said it shouldn't be a problem as long as i space the time i take the antiobiotic with the time i start drinking a beer...so, say i take both pills in the morning and have a beer late afternoon...will the antiobiotic still do it's work if i work it like that? in other words, can i really drink a beer or two a day while taking the amoxi? or should i really try and stay as beer free as possible - cuz that's gonna be hard!! :insane:

Amoxi takes forever to start taking affect which is why they always give you that bottle filled with pills and tell you to take em all even if you start feeling better!

Drink the beer:) :) :) Just leave about an hour between the amox and beer.

Max: you take amox for 10 days to totallly kill the bacteria, not because it takes a long time to get started. If you don't take it for the proper length of time, bacteria become resistant --> that is why antibiotics don't work as well after they have been out for several years, folks don't follow the directions.

Roger...

yeah, i asked the doc at the time if it would be better to take something that would be a 5 day kill and he said that 5 days wouldn't be enough time to really kill off the bug and i might have to come back for more...i wasn't too thrilled bout that. you'd think the 5 day antibiotics would be more potent tho??

Not necessarily so. We select antibiotics based on the most likely bacteria we are treating. We know from experience that sinusitis takes more time and a longer course of antibiotics to cure.

Prost!:)

I don't know if the doc will agree, but when I am going over the discharge paperwork for someone leaving the hospital for an infection, I tell them to throw away the toothbrush (may have dormant infectious stuff), re wash all glasses, plates, silverwear in HOT water (might be overkill, but...), make sure they wash their hands !!!
I've also had patients return to the ED 2 weeks after being discharge, stating " I felt better after taking the antibiotics for a few days so I stopped taking them or they made my stomach upset so I stopped taking my antibiotics. Almost make me want to choke them !
I hope this helps everyone, the major cold and flu season is coming up

I agree. WASH YOUR HANDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I carry Purell hand sanitizer with me when I travel and I use it in my office both before and after every patient.
:yeahthat:

Any chlorine containing product is good. There is a differnece between "sanitizing" and disinfecting. Disinfecting kills most of the bugs. I use 2 ounces of liquid chlorine bleach per gallon of water, that is sufficient to kill bacteria and viruses.

The pre-mixed products will cost you more $$$ ... but you are a pilot and can afford it, right?
:nana2:

In our house, we keep a spray bottle of chlorine bleach solution around for disinfecting purposes.

they don't let you take purell on the planes anymore cuz of the whole liquid ban...i get kinda nauceous if i can't get up and at least wash my hands on a plane or something...i can't wait till they lift that ban!!! :nana2:

hmmm hadn't thought of that before.. hope they'll stay moist...most wipes here in phx end up drying out really quick...

well, if it has to be diaper wipes, diaper wipes it is! it's better than nothing!! :)

Kristie for traveling they have the wipes in a plastic easy open/close thing. Those are great since they fit in a purse or bag.

Ok, Actually, I have stuff from the hospital I work at.. Kills everything..HIV, Hep B, Fungus, Staph Aureus, Salmonella, Pseudomonas, MRSA (that nasty stuff from above), VRE (even nastier stuff, I know someone wants to know..Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, and more, you get the idea.
It comes in cloths so this is how I clean around the house, the beach is great, but this was free

Great stuff if you don't have to buy it - PRICEY!!!!!!:) The trade name is Cavi-Wipes and they are about $9 a container for 160 towelettes. Just thought you might want to know what the active ingredients are, diisobutylphenoxyethyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride and isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol).
:nana2: I knew that chemistry degree would come in handy somewhere :)

The chlorox thing is cheaper.

I thought about puting the ingredients down, but I'm not the best typist and I'm at work, not really supposed to be on the computer :D I'm just sitting here in the ICU waiting for my Drug OD to arrive from the ED. My other patient can win a snoring contest hands down!!!
