Superbugs & colds...

Are there such things as superbugs and can a bacterial or viral infection mutate while in your system? We got this cold from my niece last weekend. doug hardly ever gets sick and even he came down with the bug. that was pretty strange in itself!

I guess the reason i'm asking is because i've still got one heck of a cold and it's been 6 days and not nearly going away (i might have to call in a sick day again, i just don't want to), only seems to be getting worse. At the beginning, i started taking sudafed over the counter cold meds and that seemed to help but this weekend, i've got practically no voice, having a hard time breaking up whatever is in my lungs and my sinus's getting horribly stuffed up. I'm trying to let my system sweat it out because i know that just adding more drugs isn't necessarily a solution to boosting the immune system...but, i also have to go to work....Besides expectorant to break up the stuff in the lungs and taking extra multi-vitamins/oj/extra sleep.. is there anything out there that can help whip this out of my system a little quicker?

Bacteria and viruses don't mutate in the body. They mutate over time as they are passed from one person to the next.

Your problem (you & Doug) is no continuous exposure to kids.:sarcasm: If you are around kids all of the time, you build immunity by repeated exposure to viruses and bacteria. Kids drag all kinds of bugs home exacerbated by not washing their hands, drooling, coughing, etc. (Nasty little critters:nana2: ).

Most viral infefections last 7-10 days. If symptoms last longer than this, then there may be complications from the original infection. May be time to see a doc if it is over 10 days.
:)

Along these lines, is it common for someone (me) to only get sick once a year? Every year, without fail, I get the plague and feel like I am going to die around Feb or March, lasts for about a week, then goes away. No amount of NyQuil, Jack Daniels and Sudafed or just good ole horse tranq will make it any better.

Don't get MRSA.
ACK!!! That sucked.
Sometimes we don't build up immunity working in the healthcare community

MRSA (methecillin resistant staph aureus) is a bacteria that hes developed resistance to most antibiotics and specifically methicillin. This is due in part to the indiscriminant use of antibiotics in our culture. Everyone insists on an antibiotic when the doc knows the infection is viral or a minor infection. As newer antibiotics have come on hte market, the drug companies market the devil out of them and tr to get docs to use them instead of the simpler and older ones. Patients have also made the problem worse by not finishing their antibiotics when prescribed but having stopped them when they started to feel better. This has allowed bacteria to become resistant because the antibiotics were not used long enough to kill the bacteria completely.

just good ole horse tranq

LOL - the most common horse sedative is deadly to humans, just an FYI! I have never understood why people want to use horse anything - OK whips in the bedroom is understandable, but not anything else.

aww man... now there's a reason to *have* kids! :nana2: it is true... we don't have enough exposure to kids but then my sister is constantly having ring around the family when it comes to colds and the little ones - so that reason doesn't really fly! hahaha

if it goes past this coming weekend, then yea i'll be seeing a doc. Thanks Doc!! :)

Speaking of that, I got over the cold over the weekend and it's actually BACK.

I wonder how in the hell that happened...

It may be residual cold (viral infection) or seasonal allergies. The hay fever season is starting. In some parts of the US it begins in August. Here in PHX September and the end of the monsoon bring out the weeds. Try Claritin.

Heck, I'm tellin you... I slept 10 hrs last night (coughing and sniffling intermittently thru the night) and this morning, i was WORSE than yesterday!!! I don't get it. I'm SO over this!

Sounds like you & Doug are passing this around. You are still at less than a week. I know you don't want to hear this but PATIENCE is a virtue.:)

Hey Doc, if you could keep the time thing on the down low I would appreciate it. I am starting a nutraceutical company - we are currently developing compressed time in the a bottle - we all (in the medical community) know time cures most things - we expect to be bigger than Glaxosmithkline in months.

Hey doc,

I really like using sudafed non-drying sinus but can't seem to find it in any store in phoenix and even drugstore.com doesn't have it in stock. The reason i like it is because of the guaifenesin really keeps me from getting constant sinus headache and/or infection when i have a cold like this. is there any other product you can recommend over the counter that has the same product or effect that the non-drying sinus does? I wish i could find some because i get sinus infections like dogs get fleas and i try to do whatever i can to prevent it ahead of time, without it i feel like i'm in a lose lose battle, and am already starting to get continual sinus problems.

appreciate the suggestion...cold is better today, voice still the same, cough better but sinus's getting worse.

Ah ha - political correctness strikes. The reason you can't find it is the pseudephedrine in the Sudafed is used to make methamphetamine. You just need to ask the pharmacist and he/she will give it to you (after you show ID, promise to love, honor and obey, and give your first born to the PC cops).

Most stores also have either a generic or store brand that is less expensive.:)
