Summer Internship for college student

I live in Dallas in the summer. I plan to drive around tomororrow, hit up 7bar and associated and everything at KDAL. Then head up to addison and see if theres anything. I'm looking more of a 'real' job than being bi*ch boy to clean up trash because I have other opportunities for this summer, I'd just rather do things that are aviation-related. Yes, it would be easier to email the places I listed, but I got some cool business cards I have from something I do at school so I want to throw those around!

If anyone knows of anything, or has any suggestions, let me know.

For internships, there's AA/AE at DFW (unpaid), SWA at DAL (very competitive, but I understand it's paid). There are tons of FBO's, GKY, ADS, etc. You can go out to DFW or DAL and try to get a ramper/fueler job.

It all depends on what you want to do. Make money...go get a job waiting tables, bouncing, or whatever. I say enjoy life while you're in college. If you're looking for just part-time jobs I lifeguarded at W&W in Arlington during my summer breaks...loved it and had a great college experience with DAB for school and lifeguarding during the summer.

I'm not sure if you're willing to leave the area ... but according to the website ... the AOPA Air Safety Foundation is still accepting applications for the Summer 2006 Intern.

It does pay ... $8.00/hour. Not much, but it does pay and they do what they can to help find lodging for those not in the commuting area. I did live close enough that I could commute.

Let me say this was an EXCELLENT opportunity. Not only aviation related, but aviation safety! First rate organization and employees. I enjoyed myself, and FlyChicaga just had a friend who really enjoyed the experience as well.

im having a heck of a time finding the info on that asf internship. point me in the right direction?
 
I didn't have my instrument rating, but still applied ... and got the internship. Never hurts to throw your name in the hat!
 
Come on, go old school, and be an intern for a Boeing 747-100/200 airline !


I was a flight ops intern last summer at Evergreen's HQs in Oregon.

The pay was $8.50/hr, and anything over 40 hrs per week was at a time and a half ($12.75). This might not be the case anymore, but I had free housing, all utilities, fully equipped. I also hitched a ride to and from work every day from another intern. (I didn't have a car there). So, my only expense was food.


Working for Evergreen was AWESOME. They have some of the friendliest chief pilots ever ! Okay, I'm never met other airline chief pilots, but still, these guys were awesome!

Lastly, the network opportunities are priceless. Getting to know, befriend, etc the chief pilots and the director of operations will go a long way, especially considering those are the guys who interview pilot applicants and make the hire/no hire decisions.
 
that sounds pretty cool. when was yours? it lists one that goes from june to september. what college students' schedule will that fit?

It was left up to me when to start for the summer, and when to leave, pretty much.

I flew out to Oregon June 1st, and my first day of work was June 2nd. Last day of work was August 26, and I flew back Aug 27th. So, I worked 3 months.

They'll accomodate you. I told them I had to leave at the end of August to go back to my university (where classes officially began September, day after labor day).

Yes!

Last summer, after I was already all set up with Evergreen, roundtrip tickets bought, free housing worked out, something happened.

Frontier Airlines called me for an engineering internship I had applied for online on their website!

They wanted to interview me, but I ended up declining it, since I was already set up perfectly with Evergreen. Granted, the Evergreen internship was not an engineering one, it was a flight operations internship. Frontier would have paid more, but no free housing, so net benefit was with Evergreen.

I thought of going to Frontier to interview, simply for the experience. But something told me that if I did well, and if by chance they offered me a job on the spot, I'd look dumb turning them down. They'd wonder why I flew out on their expense, only to turn the job down. So, I just declined the interview. My mind was set on Evergreen.

But yeah, airlines do have engineering internships.

AA has engineering Co-ops. I applied for one online, never heard back.
