Suggestion for JC...

Hey Doug,

How's about an RSS feed for the forums?

I've been using an RSS reader and absolutely love it.

Don't know how you'd do the user authentication thing, but thought I'd throw it out there.

Actually, the new version of the software, 6.5.1 has a RSS/XML engine (or whatever you call it) so you can do just that.

The only problem is that version 6.5 is buggy as hell (as we saw last month) and 6.5.1 is still in beta testing at Infopop.

Once the supposedly "unbuggy" version of 6.5.1 comes out, I'm going to watch the support threads for about a month before transitioning over to the new version.

Maybe mid-December? Early 2005?

There's one that's available for general topics on the home page now!

Doug,

You rock!!

I'm going to probably build more RSS links for the other forums, but only the ones that you can see as a unregistered user.

If you've got to be a registered user, ie forums like "The Lavatory", it'll be a lot more complicated to dig out the cookie with your login data so it'll show the new links.

I'm feeding General Topics live onto my my.yahoo.com page, it's pretty cool!

I noticed that RSS button there but didn't know what it was for. What is it for anyways? When I click it a page with coding comes up and that's it.

It's in RSS 2.0 format. But, of course, if you're using a browser to scan headlines, it's easier just to come to the website.

The RSS data is more or less meant to report the latest "headlines" on an off-site website like the personalized yahoo pages or such.

Doesn't seem to work with Explorer either.

Don't take this the wrong way, Bri, but when using the RSS feed for purposes what it's meant for, it works perfectly.

Say you have a my.yahoo.com webpage, you can use the RSS feed to show the latest posts.

Say you have another website like BrianJesusAviation.com and you wanted to list the latest five posts in General Topics on your own website, it works for that.

It is *not* a "Newsgroup".

Seems to work just fine with my Firefox.

How did you configure it? On sites with RSS on Firefox 1.0 I see the RSS icon in the lower left area of the scrollbar. None appears at JC.

I'm trying it with both firefox and internet explorer and all I see is a page with coding.

Alright...

Because I know the pain Doug is feelin' from your posts let me lay this out for you Brian.

RSS feeds are simply XML documents. IE (By the way IE stands for Is Evil) and FireFox (the name of a kick ass plane piloted by Clint Eastwood) are web browsers that display HTML pages (and variations there of).

To view an RSS feed you need a news reader such as Mozilla's ThunderBird (my viewer of choice) or NewsGator (Google "news reader")

It wll not look correct in the brower.

Now, I have a sign hanging in my office that says, "No, I will not fix your computer." So I have given you all the info that I am going to. The rest, young Padawan is up to you.

And stop Douging bug about it.

Now, back to aviation.

You can do it through Firefox...but JC doesn't have the RSS icon appearing like other RSS sites do with Firefox. The RSS link comes up with a page of code.

Nobody explained to me that I needed to open it with thunderbird. I was simply trying to use it with a web-broswer.
