My student asked whether a student pilot can add oil to an airplane to which I replied yes. We looked up the reg in Part 43.3 section g states:
except for holders of a sport pilot certificate, the holder of a pilot cert issued under part 61 may perform preventive MX on any aircraft owned or operated by that part which is not part 121 129 or 135. The way I am reading this reg, student pilots can't even add oil. Obviously that doesn't sound right because how can a student add oil for a solo cross country. Where the reg that allows a student to add oil?
Isn't adding oil technically a preventive maintenance action?
Part 43, section C lists all preventive mx of which adding oil is not listed however I always assumed topping off fluid levels was a preventive mx action. Anyone care to discuss?
Thanks
