As for the club dues, yes, you do have to cough up a signficant chunk of change up front, and some money each month, but then you get to fly inexpensively. On top of that, the planes are better taken care of at the club than they were at the FBO I used to fly out of.
Let's put it like this. Last summer, at the FBO I used to fly out of, I had to scrub several flights in a row. It was one thing after another. First it was a mag problem. Then it was a problem with the radio. Then it was a problem with the transponder. Then we had a problem with the radio again. Then we had a problem with another transponder.
After driving 35 miles each way to the FBO and having to scrub flights like that, I said screw it. I'm finding a better option.
I crunched the numbers, and even with the first year fee, the club is cheaper. In the second year, without having to pay that fee, it's so much cheaper that it's not even funny.
